Absolutely agreed! The new Lakon Asp Explorer is a beautiful ship, and definitely has the sweet spot for medium multi-role, despite being ostensibly an exploration-based frame.
Borrowed from the older Asp MkII, the hardpoint setup is beautiful with excellent convergence; the engines sound like a growly biplane; it can turn pretty damn well and you can fit great shields, too. Thanks to the design's new manufacturer, the cockpit visibility is extremely good—classic Lakon. Perhaps a little industrial but roomy and comfortable enough for long journeys—and the jump range is great.
It serves quite admirably as a combat, trading or exploration role, depending on how you outfit it, and balances these very well. There's a reason it's currently the second most popular ship amongst Commanders, next to the Faulcon deLacy Cobra MkIII! I'm flying one myself: the Black Butterfly's a beaut, and I've barely started modifying her.
I'd love to see the Krait or Mamba make a comeback, but who knows if any manufacturer will have success fitting the frame-shift drive to that old crate. I miss seeing them around, it's just not quite right without boiling a few hapless newbie pirates in their sharksteeth Kraits, but who'd fly a ship without a Frame-Shift Drive in 3301? — CMDR Alyssa Rowan
