Best ship for exploring?

I want to bump up to a better ship for exploring than what I am using right now: a T6 ( 'Ole Pack Mule). It has an ok range on its FSD; 18.2LY. I want something with more oomph. I want to reach those out of the way systems that I can't reach right now.

So, which is best for exploring. Keep in mind that I want to keep shields just in case! ;)

The Asp and the Diamondback Explorer are probably your best bet then. Both are very forgiving of carrying extra gear vast distances. Even weaponed up they still break 30ly pretty comfortably.
Despite the purchase price difference, they are similar costs to fully equip. Asp is a lot more maneuverable, and has a better cockpit view in my opinion.... its also quite a lot uglier than the diamondback which is very visually interesting. :)

Pick either... can't go wrong with them.

I prefer a good view. The T6 has an awesome view from the cockpit. It would be very hard to go with something.... not as good.

The asp has a massive amount of window space. The Diamondback as well, with the exception of two support struts on either side of the forward-facing window (quoteth Lance ' Spacecat' D). Asp has more internal slots available than the DBack but costs a substantial bit more. With similar fittings, probably around 3-4mil more for an Asp than a DBack. But if all you're looking for is the jump range, it's certainly easy to fit a DBack as well as an Asp for a fraction of the price.

If you love the T6 cockpit (the only nice thing about the flying pig, amha), why not update it to an explorer config ?
You can easily go to 25-30ly range.

The DBE is better for exploring compared to the Asp, although the Asp has a better view in my opinion. So fi you are stuck between the two and want a better view go for the Asp.

The Asp is the top dog for exploring and I have one permanently rigged in the station ready get out into the black :)

In my opinion, the best ship for exploration really depends on where you'll be going and what route you'll take. Going to the rim, or above/below the galactic plane? Bigger jump range is very important then, as it'll allow you get farther. In more dense areas, a big jump range is nice as it'll get you to your destination faster, but not crucial. If, however, you are going on long expeditions, then I'd say that your cockpit view is just as important. You are going to be looking at it a lot, so best pick something you're the most satisfied with.

In your case, I'd second Odengard's suggestion: if you really prefer the T6's cockpit view, then you should try outfit it for exploration. I did a quick loadout, it can do 29.5 ly: see it here.
That's more than enough for anywhere, unless you want to travel as far out into the rim as possible. (In which case the Anaconda is best, followed by the Asp and the DBE.)

To be honest, the best exploration ship is the one you are in. SagA has been visited by every ship available so its what ever you fancy.

Jump range is also important if not going to the rim. I'm on my way to the core in a 30ly Asp, taking economy jumps to see and scan as much as possible on the voyage. Having 30ly rang means I never ever have to worry about fuel. I can run a full 1000ly route with a single tank, because the short jumps use next to no fuel at all.

I prefer the Diamondback, since I'm currently heading for Sag A* in mine (and I have a substandard FSD, only about a 21-23ly range, depending on my fuel load). If you're curious about the cockpit view...

That's a pretty decent view from the cockpit Tiger.

I have my T6 pretty much set for exploring. I know I could go with lesser parts in some things, get rid of shields and get rid of my cargo bays to save weight, but in the end it is also my hauler (for now) and I don't want to have to go shopping for all the parts that make it a great low level trader. That is why I wanted to buy a ship just for exploring. Besides, I have a little throw-away ship for combat, so why not one for each aspect of the game?? =D

Hauler. Asp is so caravan with sun roof.

Also - dropping out of Frameshift the hauler sounds like its about to die... that always makes me smile. Mind you... the ASP sounds like a Superfortress from WWII. Just awesome.
The Hauler is also missing the internal compartments to put in Repair Modules or other fripperies.

Actually - I just looked at your original post. You could go an awful lot further than you currently are just by upgrading your T6....

I just read the first few replies and no one seems to be mentioning that the Asp carries a much larger fuel scoop. If you get the B6 (7m credits which you get back when you sell) you can top up your tank in about 45 seconds compared to about 2 minutes with the A4 on the DBE. On a 2000 jump trip scooping every 6 jumps, this adds up to hours of frustration. You can in theory reduce your refills to every 20 jumps or so if you scoop a bit each jump as your fsd is cooling, but it's risky and means you don't get to scan anything. Also you'll be screwed every time you enter a sector with majority unscoopable stars, so for that reason I save my DBE for exploring nearby space, or when I'm doing economical routing (say to collect scans for a CG)

Trust me, go with the Asp

That is something to really consider drkaii. I was actually leaning towards the Asp, but it will just depend on my creds when I get back to civilization.

I bought the Asp. Gotta fit it out and then head back into the black. It was a tough decision for me as I had enough creds to buy a T7. I could have made the creds back pretty fast with that big cargo hold, but I want to go out for some more exploration!
