Best Source Material for 'Elite: Dangerous' Universe?

Hi everyone!

I've played Elite: Plus, and I understand the universe and the 'Strategy' behind the game (which is simply, 'survive in the universe')...

But what is the best source, as kind of an 'Epilogue' to Elite: Dangerous? Something to setup the 'Universe' we're about to live in.

I vaguely remember the 'Elite: Plus' story (Which I should reread), something about Father/Son or Uncle getting mixed up in some stuff, and 'Bequeathing' you with a under equipped Cobra, some debt, a little cash, and 3 missiles 'on the rails'. So equipped, you wander off into the universe in search of.... (Insert your motivation from the story, here).

In Elite: Dangerous, I know there's three forces in the Universe: (Imperials, Federation and Independents), but what is the back story?

- What disrupted the Imperial's dominance?
- How did the Federation come to be?
- Why are the independents, well, wanting to be independent?

I know that there are several authors of Elite inspired fiction, and I am grateful for the 'Continuation' of the canon, but I want to read those *AFTER* I understand the events that brought about the Elite Universe!

Anyone know the best 'Source' of 'Elite Universe' as it will be the second we enter 'Elite: Dangerous'? I.e. What is this game's universe based on?

Thanks, and I'm gonna go find the Elite Manual and reread that intro story! :)

Snuggie...

P.S. Sorry if there is an obvious answer somewhere in the forums already. I went through General, Beta, and Role-Play and just got inundated, so I came back here. :)

I think the absolute best will be Dave Hughes's RPG, but the other novels (Check fantasticbookspublishing.com) are also great setup.

(Scooby Sound) Aerrrooooouuu?!?!? There's an RPG?!?!?

(Rushes off to boardgamegeek (.com) ) to look....

Update 1:

Is this the one you're talking about? http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/140312/elite-station-run

Really cool that it was free to download! I'm gonna see if I can find the source. And it's only 2012 as well. Wow!

Update 2:

Aaugh, I found the link, but it seems the site is down. :/

Link I found to MadCap Elite: Station Run.

Anywhere else to find the material?

Umm, no, those are Selezen's old Elite RPG.. he' working on a new one for Elite Dangerous

The best place might be the Elite Dangerous Pilot's Guide Manual. On pages 9-10 you will find a copy of Selezen's (Dave Hughes) Officially Approved revised timeline for the Elite Universe. (his original one was produced long before the ED kickstarter came along)

It should answer many of your questions.

There's a printer-friendly version too.

This is really really good!

Is this the 'official manual', if so, why isn't the super-cool EliteDangerous (.com) Official site modeled after it?!?!?

I've only briefly thumbed through this thing, but I want to buy a hardback copy of this to go with my Elite: Dangerous game!

Thanks for the link? What exactly are the plans to release this?!?! I would really stem down on the 'This game needs a manual' whining, and step up not the universe!

In 3 pages of reading, my confidence in the game is totally re(re)assured on the level of thought and depth of this Universe!

This book is potentially as exciting as the Elite: Dangerous experience itself! Why is it not more well-known?!?

(Or maybe I've been living on Sol too long.)

Thank you so much for sharing... I'm off to read more!

P.S. My deepest thanks for those who put the work into this... I can tell it's taken a lot of work and well thought out (Hell, the first section is titled: "FUTURE PROOFING ELITE"... ) Thanks again to all that have worked on this.
