Best way to earn credits?

Okay, maybe not looking for the best way, just looking for some advice on my best opportunities to earn some credits. I'm not looking for exploits, milk runs, or smuggling like Robigo was, just a CMDR needing to make some legal credits so I can afford a bigger ship or ships. I won't traffic in slaves, Imperial or not and I'm not smuggling. I also don't want to take missions to assassinate anyone, although going after pirates would be okay, I want to try playing as clean as possible.

I have a Cobra Mk IV with A-rated thrusters and FSD; 48t of cargo space and enough fuel to get about 190 ly on a tank and a jump range of just under 19 ly unladen. I had a Cobra Mk III but sold it off since I wanted something a bit more durable with larger cargo capacity. I have just under 3 mil credits, most of my assets are in the ship

So, should I just find a good trade route and go back and forth for awhile?
Should I try to find a good rare trading route?
Should I find a home base and work on missions?

Or should I sell or retrofit my Cobra to do other jobs like exploring, bounty hunting or mining?

Community goals and rare goods trading is what started bringing some good money in my Cobra Mk III and allowed me to buy an ASP. I usually would switch activities quite often, I don't like to do the same stuff for too long. With an advanced discovery scanner I also ranked up as a explorer a bit and made money when doing the long rare goods loop route.

Surface scavenging has had a hell of a boost
.
You can earn about 80000CR average per POI now approx. 8 canister per POI and approx. 10000CR average if you sell at the right (best) stations
.
Pre 2.1 it was about 6 per POI and about 2500CR per canister. I used to think that a Cobra was about the max ship for planetary work, you could make more money quicker outside
.
In a 100T type six I can make about 1mCR in about 3hrs or so, I could make more in other ways but this is a real fun way of doing it Im out in a keelback at the moment to see if that brings the time down.
.
The type 6 is basically run away from any ships that approach and 1 SRV needs refuelsing rearming so that's scavenge for materials to do that, my keel back though I have loaded 2 SRVs as a trail. If it works I will try an ASP with 2 SRVs on the surface
.
Mining establishments used to be an ace place to find - now they are a pain as they are still full of gallite/Bauxite but the 2 big structures with a generator that used to have 4 Tonnes of tea and 2 of bauxite now has Palladium platinum taaffite gold etc

Find a system with an outbreak and sell basic medicines from the nearest best source.

You thought Imperial Slaves had obscene cr/ton rates? Wait until you see this. [hehe]

You can end up with illegal ggods but you can dump them if you wanted

Oooh thats useful info cmdr. ☺

An example of surface POI

just sat at one after stripping it

3 Gold
1 Platinum
1 Jadeite
1 Consumer Tech
1Taaffeite
1 Occupied escape pod

Using the galactic averages 93553 Credits in a little under 10 mins of play

Literally any CG that pays, and high RES bounty farming. If you want some easier credits and are comfortable sitting in a limited area, try Powerplay, since it rewards quite a bit of credits per week at the higher ranks. Credits that don't require a ton of work to get.

The slaves exists within a legal framework. Their well-being is guaranteed. Think of it as welfare for the indebted, or whatever prompted an individual to become a slave in the first place.
Can other societies boast the same concern for their underclasses?

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I might try a rare trade route or selling medicine, I have enough range and I'm pretty good at the Brave Sir Robin to escape most of the time. BTW, I went to Rusani last night and the rare Old Smokey wasn't showing. Don't know if that was a change but I haven't seen any mention of it and I did Google it. I did pickup a mission as Rusani that netted me a bit over 100,000 cr, I got interdicted 2x by AI, one I escaped from as I couldn't even touch his shields, cops took him out as I left; the other was a novice Eagle that took less than a minute to kill. No bounty, can't remember if where I was was in anarchy but his scan didn't show Lawless.

I had a type 6 before and the capacity is good and so long as I can stick to one or 2 systems I might consider using it for planetary scavenging. Maybe once I've earned enough to afford a T-6 without scavenging or selling my current ship I'll buy and outfit 1 for that purpose.

In my Cobra Mk III before the AI got all SkyNet I did okay in CZ and RES sites; it was fun with the right loadout, winging up with a friend, but I think I'll wait until I can more easily afford to lose a few ships. For now I want to earn some credits so I can afford to experiment again.

I will continue with any CG that works with hauling, I haven't gotten into the BH types yet.

And while I'm sure I'll derail my own thread with this, an indentured servant is still a slave, a slave is a slave regardless of how nice the master is. Now, if I create a new account and my new CMDR is a low-life scum who has no principles so long as the money is good... (not casting aspersions here on other players, just a role playing thing)

Sothis. 20-60mil per hour.

I've heard of Sothis, never been. Smuggling, right? Nope, my CMDR is a "good guy" in a dog-eat-dog galaxy.

Although it does make it difficult to stick to my principles. Who knows, maybe my CMDR will have an experience that breaks those principles and makes him "turn to the dark side"

yeah that experience is what we commonly call greed...
777Driver has some great runs that he has posted about out of Obsidian orbital/ Maia system... he doesn't run slaves either

Sothis isn't normally smuggling, primarily long range bulk hauling. Some missions pay up to 10 million each, not sure what you could pick up in a Cobra, the cargo requirements have gone up in 2.1

There is always a risk of only seeing donation missions at Sothis. Takurua used to be a very good legal haulage route (enroute to Sothis) it didn't seem to be offering good missions when I last checked.

I turn tricks for onionhead down in Ashby City

You gotta do what you gotta do, nobody here will judge you ;)

Is rare trading still a thing? I remember back when I was in my Cobra I can make better CR/hr in rare trades than in simple bulk hauling because of the limited cargo space. I haven't tried rare trades in months, so I don't know what state it is in now.
