General / Off-Topic Best & Worst Sci Fi Movie Ever

being a total Sci-Fi Movie nut I would have to go with Battlefirld earth for the worst. and fo rthe Best I would have to go for Alien, reason being that the visuals have not aged since they first appeared on the silver screen and if they released it today it would still be as fresh as it was back in 1979.

Yep.
I was disappointed with Prometheus but not for many of the reasons mentioned by other reviewers (I thought the plot and story made sense). Visually I thought it could have built on the success of what worked in Alien - that was atmospheric. In Prometheus it seemed the visual style worked against the intended atmosphere of fear and tension, which spoiled everything else.

I'm hoping that the generally good word-of-mouth about Dredd will generate a heap more cash through DVD rentals and sales. If they do make a second one, I'd guess we'd get to have a look at the Cursed Earth.

The cursed earth adventure from the comic would make for a epic film but also an expensive one.

IIRC read some where they were thinking about the dark judges for a sequel.

Top/Bottom 5:

Best: Stalker, Solaris (1979), A Scanner Darkly, Akira, Metropolis

Worst: Species, Independence Day, 2012, Plan 9 from Outer Space, Wing Commander

Just like everyone else, Aliens & Aliens 2 are probably my favorite sci-fi films. I'm a big fan of the Farscape & Firefly TV series, I thought the movies of the series were pretty good. Seeing as both films tied up loose ends the tv series couldn't.

Worst Sci-fi...has to be Prometheus, I've never seen such drivel in my life.

This thread just isn't giving "Firefly" the praise it deserves. I'm hoping everyone at Frontier's watched it, with its corrupt corporations, its tinpot dictators, and its lucrative business dealings.

I guess it's because there's better and worse out there.

I can't say what's the worst sci fi out there. I've seen so much dross much worse than "Star Crash" All those years I could've saved if I only knew where the "off" button on my telly was. But special mention has to go to "Next". To take the most wonderful short story "The Golden Man" and then rip the guts out of it, fill it full of Hollywood tinsel and top it off with a curly wig. Well! I'd like to give each and every person involved a bag of excrement set on fire, and left on their doorstep after ringing their bell.

There are some corkers as well. It's like the movie industry realised that people pay for good stories when "The Sixth Sense" was a success. I'd go back further though; "Forbidden Planet". The special effects are dated and the dialogue now sounds a little cheesy, but the plot is still solid. The guy who thought up the story must be a genius.

Science Fiction movies that should be made? Apart from Elite of course, I've got a soft spot for comedy Sci Fi. The only film to capture Philip K 's sense of humour is "A Scanner Darkly". I'd also like to see something from John Sladek. But I think Slippery Jim diGriz is more likely.

Hmmm. Although no doubt the Dark Judges would make for a strong storyline, I think it'd be way too soon to be exploring the 'mystical' parts of the Dredd universe.

I'd much rather they actually explored the city first - and got the more casual viewer used to the world. The initial Chopper story would give ample chance for that.

In fact, the more I think about it, the more Dredd would suit an ongoing TV series. Not, I might add, that there's any chance of that happening. :(
