News Beta access upgrade path

Paid access to the beta was only included at the request of the player base, with many claiming they did not know about the Horizons pre order offer. Some folks will **** and moan about anything in these forums, if you are not interested don't pay, get over it and wait until it hits live.

I am over it. I just think this pretend-beta, which is really for the most part about paying to play early, is bad in principle, and so I'm not in beta. All I've done is express my opinion on it, which I think is fair, so I'm not sure why the attitude was necessary. Unless your point is that if I don't like it I should just not use it myself and shut up about it, which seems to contradict the whole point of having a forum. But no, I'm not losing sleep over it, just saying that this is one thing I dislike about a developer I otherwise generally do like :)

Why do you think the testing would be more serious if beta was free for everyone? You say now instead of testing, it's just "pay to play early". Removing the price tag won't turn it into "serious testing", but into "play early".

I don't disagree with you. I'm saying beta testing should be a more serious process involving a select group of beta testers that will actually test, and know how to do it, otherwise the devs turn into this reactionary entity that just responds to whatever is whined about the most. Given the major issues some of the recent updates have had having left beta, I don't think many would argue that the beta processes haven't been very successful for them. A part of the problem is rushing beta periods as well, but in general, the way FDev does beta testing is far from optimal imho.

Ah, but you must not upset mummy-Dev because they might quit the game, then they lose the game or something like it. It`s a form of stockholm syndrome, where the game Dev almost literally becomes the lost mummy or daddy for them, while forgetting that its a form of hostaging. Because they make games, they can have no criticism of them. I`ve looked at this phenomenon for some years. It`s a problem with almost every relatively popular game out there, even niche ones. I think game devs (or at least the Publisher money suits) are well aware of this and most use it. Someone should do a study on it. Maybe I will.

Hey, at least we'll get some science done, so it wasn't a total loss :p

A few of you were asking yesterday if the beta upgrade path would be available at any point! Well here it is:

https://www.frontierstore.net/games...ite-dangerous-horizons-beta-upgrade-pass.html

Thanks for offering this as a standalone...

It does not seem that you can buy the upgrade as a gift for someone else on the store, like you can for other digital products. Is the ability to gift the Beta Upgrade meant to be there? If not, any plans to make it giftable? It would make for a cool prize!

There are many reasons to want to use the Beta as there are people wanting to pay for it. Personally I use it to get some experience of new features, and feed back to FD if necessary. When engineers went in you got to check out virtually every mod possible, this saved me loads of time 'in game' as I knew the mods I wanted. The one thing 'wrong' was it didn't give any idea of how difficult it was going to be in game to get those mods. This time around I've been trying out Anacondas and Corvettes as one of these ships will be my next purchase, there not much between them on paper but I 'get on' with the Corvette much better, some thing I would have spent a lot of in game time and credits finding out.
