Beta backer "free access" to a new ship... when and which?

So... back before release, when it was announced that additional ships would be added to the game, it was also announced that Beta backers would receive "free access" to one of those ships.

There was much speculation as to what that meant. One of the prevailing theories was that it would be a ship that normally required rank to attain, and Beta backers could obtain it without rank (just as we got the Sol permit without Fed rep).

I haven't seen any mention of this since.

However, the upcoming release of the Imperial Courier got me thinking about it again. Since the rank required to buy it normally will be relatively low, it would seem to be a good candidate for a nice but not overpowered perk.

Thoughts?

Yeah, good question OP, I forgot all about this, when are we getting access to this free ship they mentioned?

Those will be 5 ships not initially planned for the game, and will be made after the initial set of 25 has been completed. I would expect that around the end of this year. Patience, young padawan. :)

I forgot about this myself. A few month back they said a free choice of ship from the 4 or 5 new ones yet to be added.

I dont know if it means between the fer de lance, vulture, diamondback and corvette, and they are waiting until all 4 are in the game or what or its some other ships..

Personally I'd rather earn the ships myself.

I won't find the quote, but i know this was specifically confirmed to be a ship that would be provided without payment - so like the free eagle.

this makes me assume it will not be the federal corvette or panther clipper :p

Well it will be a ship after the first 25 ships are in game. How many are there right now? Is it 17?
The wording was a bit vague as to whether the players get to individually choose which one of the 5 extra ships they would like, or if Frontier Development were choosing which of the 5 was free.

Well, I was sort of hoping for the Courier because it's gorgeous and I expect my Alliance CMDR would make better use of a multi-role ship than my Imperial who is a straight up combat pilot.

My Imp is a Count (ess), so obviously I have no objection to earning rank, but... it's the wrong CMDR!

It will probably be ships that requires no rank unlocks. So I think I we can rule out faction specific ships. It could be 4 that are all still yet to come.

Or Maybe frontier forgot too. :)

We are all going to pick the most expensive one anyway.

No one said anything about the free choice of the ships. It is planned to be one of the additional five ships ##26-30 when it is released.

Welcome to Elite: Dangerous Newsletter #49!

In this week’s newsletter David Braben reflects on the whole development process and how the game has evolved from the original game outline to where we are today – and announces that there will eventually be 30 playable ships in Elite: Dangerous, 5 more than we had previously said!

Being a Beta backer is the only way you will be able to play Elite: Dangerous until 16th December. In addition to that and the other existing Beta benefits such as Mercenary Edition and automatic permit to visit Sol, today we are also announcing:
•25% off in-game ship insurance for life to all our Beta backers
•free access to one of the 5 new ships when it’s released!
as a ‘thank you’ for all their help.

Ship No30... the in-system scooter :)

... or maybe we'll have planetary landings by then and it'll be an actual ship????

It's been clarified a number of times. We get a ship for free. We don't get a choice of which one. It will be one of the additional five ships beyond the 25 that were promised as a result of reaching the stretch goels during the Kickstarter, so as has been said in this thread, it'll most likely be towards the end of the year.

The Newsletter states "Free access to one of the five new ships when it's released"

This leads me to think that:
  1. The ship will not be free
  2. Non alpha/beta backers will have to earn access to purchasing the ship, in a similar fashion to how Federal & Empire ships are unlocked through faction ranking

I think they clarified that "free" access meant no in game credits would be needed to buy the ship. This of course doesn't mean much to many backers because they will have enough credits to purchase any new ships.
