Beta backer "free access" to a new ship... when and which?

The "FR"eagle was a freebie that came with the mercenary preorder that is all. Backers automatically got the mercenary edition which contained:
~ Elite Dangerous
~ Extra Eagle fighter ship docked in second location
~ Pack of ship paint
~ Day One ship decal
~ Digital players guide
~ Concept art digital book
Backers, mind you this doesn't mean those that pre ordered the mercenary edition, also are suppose to get:

Whatever it is, by the time they get around to giving it to us, hardly anybody who qualifies for it will need it, because they will mostly be well beyond starter ships. So unless it happens to be a very nice ship that I would want to keep, I will probably just sell it straight away. So what started out as a nice gesture to compensate for them missing theior dates, will end up being almost irrelevant.

The message has been quoted several times in this thread, and while the meaning of "free access" may be open to question, it was quite clearly referring to a yet-unreleased ship to be added to the game at a later date.
That's been thoroughly covered in this thread... No, it's a free ship, a la freagle, after the inital 25 ships are done, and it will be one of the 5 additional ships that weren't planned at first. It's going to be a free ship, likely either at the end of the year, or early next year. We know nothing else, other than that.

I hope you are right but I think thats being optimistic.
The game went to "gamma" in November 2014, and I believe there were 15 ships in the game. The python and I think the adder were the last 2 to be added.
Since then the Vulture and Fer de Lance have been added, and in several weeks we will have the Courier and Diamondback.
Thats 4 new ships in 6-7 months.
At that rate by early 2016 there will hopefully be all 25 original ships, then another 6 months+ for the additional 5. Mid next year might be a more realistic date.
Its a free ship from a choice of 5 as clarified by Michael Brookes post number 18 in the thread here

I was kind of hoping it would be a low tier ship, think cobra or cheaper, and would be a side-grade to the current ships. I too would like to earn a decent ship not have it handed to me but having something with a little flavour as an extra would be great. I still use my Freagle for instance because I just love it but switch to something more capable when needed.
Ideally I'd like something along the lines of a Mamba, Gecko or Krait but there's no guarantee they're even going to be in game
