So the eagle was already in the game when that was announced or not?
Being a Beta backer is the only way you will be able to play Elite: Dangerous until 16th December. In addition to that and the other existing Beta benefits such as Mercenary Edition and automatic permit to visit Sol, today we are also announcing:
25% off in-game ship insurance for life to all our Beta backers
free access to one of the 5 new ships when it’s released!
as a ‘thank you’ for all their help.
You sure they didn't mean access to new ship in the beta for testing?

The message has been quoted several times in this thread, and while the meaning of "free access" may be open to question, it was quite clearly referring to a yet-unreleased ship to be added to the game at a later date.
...it'll most likely be towards the end of the year.
The Newsletter states "Free access to one of the five new ships when it's released"
This leads me to think that:
- The ship will not be free
- Non alpha/beta backers will have to earn access to purchasing the ship, in a similar fashion to how Federal & Empire ships are unlocked through faction ranking

Its a free ship from a choice of 5 as clarified by Michael Brookes post number 18 in the thread here

That was 15th November, time flys![]()
No, this was separate from that. It was specifically one of the ships not implemented yet at launch.

It means that you won't have to pay in-game credits for them, like the free Eagle in the mercenary edition.

Whatever it is, by the time they get around to giving it to us, hardly anybody who qualifies for it will need it, because they will mostly be well beyond starter ships. So unless it happens to be a very nice ship that I would want to keep, I will probably just sell it straight away. So what started out as a nice gesture to compensate for them missing theior dates, will end up being almost irrelevant.
Unless they give us a free stonking great ship. Then I will not complain.
