This is it:

Has anyone else been there yet? I can't find any other threads mentioning it.

I'm on my way there in a Cobra with an intermediate scanner. Still over 500ly away, will be a couple of days till I reach it.

Surprised nobody else has been there already though, surely someone must have?

I also only had the intermediate scanner, had to fly around a lot pinging, and had to fly out from the plane of the system to spot the last brown dwarf. They are all fairly close though. I'm about half way back now, it's a lot easier heading back because you have "SOL" and "ACHENAR" permanently displayed on the galaxy map to head for, whereas on the way out you have to guess your way. I wish there were some way of selecting our own persistent waypoints, like SOL and ACHENAR, on the galaxy map. And also I'm astonished that I'm the first person to post about having been there. There are plenty of old posts saying "first place I will go to is Beta Lyrae", but no-one did!

I can get there in 30 jumps or so. The reason it's been slow going is because I've been exploring every system I pass through on the way, hoping for a big payday on my return. I intended to take som screenshots of a contact binary if there were some nice views of it there, 4k even if they warrant it, and put them here. That's why I looked here to see if anyone else had done that yet. Haven't been visiting the forums much before. They won't be without visible cockpit since I'm in a Cobra though. But from that system view it doesn't appear to be much to look at anyway? Starting to wonder if it's worth the trip.

I'm going anyway of course, for the myth alone. ;)

Not a bad payday, I'd be interested to know what another person gets to see if there is a "firs finder bonus". These are the top paying systems that I scanned on the way, just a quick ping at the main star for most of them. For the time taken, I'm sure I could have earned a lot more just hauling, but Cr250k is very welcome.

Well crap. I was destroyed. I was literally only 20ly away, two more jumps to go, and entered a system were people were hostile. I'd seen other ships exploring in the systems I've been through, and sometimes they get hostile but usually they don't. And it's been sidewinders and eagles which I've dispatched easily. So in this system I was first interdicted while fuel scooping by a sidewinder, which I took out no problem. Went back to scooping, another interdiction. Submitted, expecting another quick and easy fight. It was a python, and a well armed one. Dispatched me before I could get away.

So gutted now. Like I said, I fully explored every system I went through. Probably fifty or so by now. So many metal-rich and several earthlikes. Would've been millions in data by the time I got back. Started the journey four days ago. All gone, and I didn't even get to see the system.

I have the worst luck. Yeah, I shouldn't have submitted when I didn't know what it was. This was literally my second death since gamma started, and I've been in a lot of fights. 99% of my fights have been easy. So I was over-confident. Fully accept it was my own fault but doesn't make me feel better. Why are there pirates that far out anyway? Been thinking all the while that I've been seeing way more traffic than I should as I got further and further out.

Well screw it. Now that they're saying a wipe is becoming more and more likely, I won't be starting again yet. Maybe I'll try again after the launch proper.

Awww that sucks! I hope you'll be able to laugh it off soon.

Anyone else been out there?

Been there after I needed a break from trading. I only scanned the main star and four other bodies, got around 22k for it after I returned to the next best station. All in all my little tour got me about 1.2m for just firing my advanced scanner and checking the main stars while scooping. Most systems were M-class stars with rocky or icy worlds. Very few water worlds, even fewer candidates for terraforming and one neutron star. I didn't even take a closer look at most objects, just wanted to see what's actually inside Beta Lyrae.

Might visit that region again. This time in my T-6, not the Adder. It's a nice ship, but the cockpit view is not that great. And I'm also going to be more patient next time. Heat damage caused some damage to my canopy and I still had about 150 LY to go...

So here I am necroing a thread that is 7.5 years old!

Yes, I'm back after a seven year hiatus of not playing. I'm a Kickstarter backer, and yes that picture of me is at Duxford in 2014.

Who has the credit for fiirst discovering and scanning Beta Lyrae? I can't see that info in game. But I went there in January 2015! Anyone else been there?

Yay, my name is on Beta Lyrae! I can't believe I was first. I wasn't anywhere near the cutting edge of exploration, people were cruising around in way bigger and better ships than me and yet nobody else went out to this legendary system.

Looks more or less the same as in the screenshot in the first post, with slightly different rendering.

Yes of course they did. No scana have been changed since Gamma.

Also I remember you well from Duxford 😅
The last thing I remember in the DDF before retiring was discussion as to whether they would retain this "first finder" data when the implemented the system for displaying it. I had no idea if I was first to BL at the time, it seemed rather unlikely!

Does the DDF still exist? I can see it's there in the sub-forum list but I don't have access any more. Seems the entire forum has been migrated since then.

Yeah the forum was migrated in 2019 to Xenforo. It exists, but it's really just for reference. A very occasional post is made by those who can, but so much has changed since those days in terms of the team and the direction, that I'm not sure how much use it is any more.

Glad you got your name on Beta Lyrae. I jumped in my Cobra, ditched the guns and flew straight to the Pleiades with an 11Ly jump range :D I made one jump before heading to the launch event, and then started in earnest the next day.
