Just some ideas that I had to make the multi-player aspects more fun.
1. Hiring Commanders: I think there should be a way to hire other commanders for things like security detail. You'd agree to a set amount, a description of what you need done, and the amount of time for the contract to last. You could even have them pilot other ships that you own. To avoid abuse, payments would be scaled and capped based on the hired commander's total asset value. This would prevent beginners from making easy millions. Hired commanders would also pay a rebuy cost (scaled to their assets) if their loaned ship is destroyed. While piloting a loaned ship, commanders will not be able to collect bounties or pick up missions. If a disconnect occurs or if a hired commander logs off, they're given a small fine and the ship is returned to its station of origin. There'd be more limitations, but those are a few that I can think of.
2. Physical Multi-Crew: Commanders can meet at the same station to multi-crew instead of sending a holo-me. The same system as normal multi-crew will apply, but when they arrive at a new station, physically multi-crew'd commanders can have their ships transferred at a faster rate for free. This would allow friends to "carpool" in long distance trips.
