Better to keep exploits quiet

After observing how FD has resorted to punishing players for finding and using exploits, it seems they have shot themselves in the foot. I have never used an exploit, but I think the way these are being addressed is despicable.

If I find any and hear of any, I certainly won't come on to these forums and make it known. And for those that use exploits, it would be to your benefit to be silent as well. Or you'll see your account redacted back to 1,000cr.

thx to FD for providing the proper motivation to find and report bugs/exploits.

What was your expectation then ?

Finding and reporting exploits would be rewarded ?

Another thing, exploits aren't something you report on the forum....ever.

You report them to support.

I found exploits in Alpha & Beta & reported them. The main reason not to exploit them is not just 'cos you'll be found out, it's 'cos it's BORING!!!*

If you find an exploit you can bet someone else will find it and it won't be secret for long.

There's plenty of ways of making money while having fun.

*Except the free missiles one - that was fun and I DID exploit it in Alpha... 48 missiles from stealth on an unexpecting commander - that was EPIC :D:D

still here? I thought you hated this game? why bother playing a game you think is worth zero? http://www.metacritic.com/user/terminatahx

During Alpha and Beta testing, many exploits were found and ticketed. We also played with them too. During Beta, I figured it would be my one chance to actually have 1 billion credits in my game account at any particular time, so I made a short video (hidden to everyone except FDev and me) of how to do the exploit, submitted the ticket, then spent 45 minutes hitting the 1 billion mark just so I could get a screenshot. :) I knew it would be wiped anyway, either immediately or come the next big update.

So I'll always have my screenshot.

At the time, the extra cash allowed me to test other things, like the bigger guns in the bigger ships, and gave us plenty of cash so we could do some good for the community, such as the Weapons Damage Charts (which required a lot of shooting, repairing, and shooting, and buying different hulls, and guns... lots of credits spent.)

But now, with the game actually released, I wouldn't pull something like that. If I found an exploit, I'd record it and send it in with a ticket and keep quiet. You tell one person, and they tell someone and pretty soon a lot of the server population is doing it and FDev eithers spends way too much time rolling certain people back, or they just roll everyone back. Why even get there? If they spend less time babysitting us, then they have more time to roll out new content.

And I wanna see and play with all the new content coming... :)

Yep, did the same myself - found a way to hack credits, gave myself 750,000,000 - then immediately ticketed FD with what I had done and how I did it. Played with the most expensive stuff for a day or two, then hacked my credits back to where they were before.

Except you've got it backwards.

Those of us who don't want to see exploits in the game now feel able to come to these forums and make public any new exploit we might find, in the knowledge that there will be repercussions for anyone that then uses it to gain assets.

The thread on the Founder's World exploit was exactly in the horrible situation where the OP wanted to disclose in order to put pressure on fixing it, but not wanting to disclose because of the worry that people would use it without repercussion. We even talked about this very thing in that thread.

I don't think FD will just do that to anyone who reports it, but if your abusing the system and exploiting then I think it's fair to get a wipe. The terms and conditions are pretty clear. If a player is using an exploit and making above average credits or advances due to that exploit, they may not have to tell FD as it may already be flagged, so probably better to report it or get caught and risk penalties.

I found a huge Exploit recently....took a couple hours out of my time to report it back to them communicating with them regarding the exploit and got....ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for my trouble lol.

As a matter of fact? The people that actually DID exploit and got to keep the equipment they purchased with said exploit monies did much much better than the honest person that went out of their way to report the exploit and not profit from it.

Didn't even get a pat on the back for reporting it lol.....

==================================

I would like to retract this statement - After the ED Devs confirmed it was in fact an Exploit, they gave me a considerable reward for reporting the exploit to them and working with them to resolve it. It was actually very nice of them and fair.

I think its fine to openly expose exploits.

It gives FD more reason to fix them quick and tighten up the game where its loose and plug the loop holes.

Plus it helps catch those that are likely to not report exploits that they are abusing in secret.

The funny thing nobody has exposed: An exploiter will always be a cheat. In his (hers) RL and in his (hers) gaming.
Why they do it is beyond my comprehension, to be Uber ?

Cheers Cmdr's
