Beyond Good and Evil 2

Yes it's definitely a thing to consider with how much different it is from the first one. There's quality here no doubt though and it's obvious this is a labor of love for the team.

Did they give any indication of a release date in the videos?

I have mixed feelings on this one. I'm definitely excited because it still has that offbeat crazy aesthetics, and some of the elements look fun. However, they've strayed so far from what original game was it kinda has to be judged on it's own merit.

Personally, I'm happy they are straying so far off the first game's formula. Even if they were to transport that formula 1:1 to the sequel, I feel that it'd end up underwhelming (edit: and outrdated) for me. Maybe great as a linear experience, e.g. similar to the recent Naughty Dog games, but not as an adventure game for exploring.

The first game's template in terms of game mechanics by today's standard is also very outdated. As a reminder, the first game was separated roughtly to a 50/50 ratio between linear and individually isolated corridor/room sequences and some limited free roaming and exploration in very few interconnected sectors. Vehicle and on foot traversal happened in separated areas as well.

It looks like they're expanding the scope significantly from that into a massive open world project. If it turns out to be good, that'll be right up my alley. But until then, I remain somewhat sceptical, since it could just as well turn out to be a boring open world collectaton or grindfest. I'd really love another open world action adventure similar in quality to Zelda Breath of the Wild/Horizon Zero Dawn though. In Space. And unlike the Zelda series in general, BG&E 1 is much more story driven, which BG&E 2 seems to be as well. Overall a nice change and distinguishing "feature".

I'm hoping for Witcher 3 quality here. Lots of story driven stuff with a good smattering of decent sidequesting.

One thing that has my elbow jangling though is...

UBISOFT.

They are the master and commanders of the "soulless icon" game template.

Since BG&E seems to be Michael Ancel's baby, I'm hopeful that at the very least the main story part won't end up "soulless". He was responsible for Rayman and the first BG&E after all. We'll see how the rest of the open world mechanics will turn out. Some repetion and collectatons may be unavoidable at that scale. Which I'm fine with, so long as it's optional and fun.

Yeah it's not the same team that served us repeats of Assassin's Creed. It has to be said the first game had an element of open world / collection too and that was way before the Ubi "formula". Im ok with it too as long as the game stays in character, is fun, with an interesting world to explore (the first BG&E was that exactly). I'm confident the team there can deliver something interesting, as they are all passionate about that game universe.

I still wanted a sequel though as the first game let us hanging.. this one is a prequel so we're still hanging !

Its all good. Prequel just means they'll like a sequel after this, so more BGE to potentially look forward to.
