General / Off-Topic BIG Bang PSU theory

So turned on my PSU after it was turned off (no connecting to the wall) and when I hit the pc power on (not the PSU, it was on) a loud BANG
came from it? you can imagine my fear, yes it was dead  luckily I'm a guy who like to keep spare parts around so quickly a F1 PSU change and we were rolling again.

Now my question, what can cause this? it's not the power as I got a filter between the wall and the PC, it's a EVGA P2 PSU so quality should be top notch.

Could have been a faulty FET or capacitor that was already on it's way out and couldn't handle the sudden current spike when the system was powered up. Hard to say without opening it up.

Even quality components will have the occasional defect and PSUs don't last forever. If it was an older example of the Supernova P2, it could simply have been worn out. If not, it's almost certainly under warranty.

All I have to say is I don't recommend opening it up out of curiosity, if you're not sure what you're doing:)

As someone who does reckless things with electricity while knowing better, I often neglect to mention the risks.

But yes, those capacitors can hold a dangerous charge for quit a while.
