Big Game Hunting Could Work Within The Existing Framework Of The Game

Greetings, Cmdrs.

David Braben’s mention of “big game hunting” in an early promotional video is often cited as an example of an intended feature that will likely never make it into the game.

I agree that big game hunting on foot in an atmospheric world is a long ways off, if feasible at all.

But I think a version of big game hunting could be incorporated into the game’s existing framework fairly easily.

Some of you may have seen the alien life floating around in notable stellar phenomena POI’s. Some of you may also have seen speculation about whether some of the alien life bears some physical resemblance to elements of thargoid technology—which is known to be heavily bioengineered.

I was thinking about this and wondering if there’d ever be a way to test this theory. It occurred to me that it could be a cool gameplay feature to have missions from the various research organizations asking you to find and capture certain forms of alien life for further study.

Alternatively and/or simultaneously, there could be both licit and illicit markets for various alien specimen.

Most importantly, I think this could be something we do in our ships. Obviously, you would need a bigger container module for larger specimen, which would only be feasible for larger ships. But it could work like a passenger cabin or any other cargo. There could be various weaponry specialized for different tasks—tranquilizing rounds for live captures, llarge caliber ammo for larger game, etc. Collector limpets could be used to collect the specimen. There could be limits on how long the specimen would survive in the “Cargo hold,” they could be resistant and cause internal damage, etc.

Would anyone be interested in this kind of activity? Do you think it could work within the existing framework of the game?

Again—I’m not condoning animal cruelty or hunting or anything. This is just a video game (one in which murder and slavery is commonplace, I’ll remind you). But I think this could be an interesting game mechanic that could be implemented with relative ease.

What do you think?

When did shooting at stuff become the defacto way of interacting with everything in the universe?

Frankly, I'll be more impressed when/if they give us something other than weapons to mount on our hardpoints.

If you haven’t seen JWE in action, you might well be surprised with what is feasible. I don’t play JWE, but my wife does, sometimes in stretches long enough to be called “that woman in my office”, so I’ve gotten to see quite a bit of it. Trasitioning from a “god’s Eye view” to a first-person view in a helicopter armed with a tranquilizer rifle and back, well, it’s pretty seamless and impressive... for a Dino Park Tycoon game.

I’ve little doubt they can pull this same sort of thing in Elite. Not overnight for sure, but the feasibility is definitely there.

I’m not saying that planetary hunting/capture missions should be abandoned, but I think the gameplay described above could work within the EXISTING framework of the game.

And I’m specifically saying that there could be other ways of interacting with the life forms besides just hunting them. I.e., collecting them, capturing them for study, Herding and farming them, etc.

With some new ships specifically designed for the job - the Federal Cattlewagon, the Alliance Cowtrain etc :)

To be clear, it's not that I'm opposed to the idea of "hunting".
It's just that it's really just another spin on the idea of "find something and shoot it" and I wish FDev would make the effort to come up with something different.

Give me some ship-launched thumpers, some sandworms and an SRV to harvest the spiceblow and I'll be happy as a pig in poop. [up]

A tipe of electric net for Capturing lifeforms and a little pluzze minigame to reveal its chemical makeup so you can sell the data would be nice.

I'm quite tired of shooting at stuff to interact with it. Let me do some science.

Hell, even if EVA ever comes i expect to be going into caves and delericts for research and exploration over FPS shenanigans.

I’m with you on that. I was just clarifying that I’m not proposing solely shooting at the life forms. There could be other interesting ways to interact with them and yes it’s similar to existing gameplay mechanics but that’s kind of the point.. you wouldn’t need atmospheric planets or other huge technical changes for the kinds of gameplay I am proposing.

For example, we could capture living specimen and deliver them to scientists for study, or collect information in a Darwin-esque surveying and scientific study expedition.

I just think it would be pretty easy for them to add this stuff into the game while we wait for the huge changes and it could be fun. But I agree, this could be expanded on later when more mechanics are added into the game.

It certainly has some nice features. Unfortunately it feels like most of the gameplay is waiting for timers to tick down.
