Greetings, Cmdrs.
David Braben’s mention of “big game hunting” in an early promotional video is often cited as an example of an intended feature that will likely never make it into the game.
I agree that big game hunting on foot in an atmospheric world is a long ways off, if feasible at all.
But I think a version of big game hunting could be incorporated into the game’s existing framework fairly easily.
Some of you may have seen the alien life floating around in notable stellar phenomena POI’s. Some of you may also have seen speculation about whether some of the alien life bears some physical resemblance to elements of thargoid technology—which is known to be heavily bioengineered.
I was thinking about this and wondering if there’d ever be a way to test this theory. It occurred to me that it could be a cool gameplay feature to have missions from the various research organizations asking you to find and capture certain forms of alien life for further study.
Alternatively and/or simultaneously, there could be both licit and illicit markets for various alien specimen.
Most importantly, I think this could be something we do in our ships. Obviously, you would need a bigger container module for larger specimen, which would only be feasible for larger ships. But it could work like a passenger cabin or any other cargo. There could be various weaponry specialized for different tasks—tranquilizing rounds for live captures, llarge caliber ammo for larger game, etc. Collector limpets could be used to collect the specimen. There could be limits on how long the specimen would survive in the “Cargo hold,” they could be resistant and cause internal damage, etc.
Would anyone be interested in this kind of activity? Do you think it could work within the existing framework of the game?
Again—I’m not condoning animal cruelty or hunting or anything. This is just a video game (one in which murder and slavery is commonplace, I’ll remind you). But I think this could be an interesting game mechanic that could be implemented with relative ease.
