Newcomer / Intro Big moment

I just wanted to share a big moment in ED for me - I traded my Hauler in for a Cobra Mk3 last night. I have been looking forward to getting into the Cobra since I started the game, and getting one was the main goal I had set myself up until this point.

I've got 570k left, so should be enough to start outfitting and keep a healthy buffer. First upgrades will probably be to expand the cargo capacity, get a significantly better power distributer and a moderately better FSD.

I'll be using the Cobra for trading for the time being, and putting the proceeds into my Sidewinder, which I'll use to practice my combat skills/bounty hunting. I appreciate it is not some commander's favoured combat ship, but I'd like to take advantage of the free hull and relatively low rebuy costs, and to get as good at combat as I can in that small ship. Once I feel I've taken the Sidewinder as far as it can go, then I think I'll be looking to get a Type 6 and using the proceeds to start outfitting the Cobra for combat, but that's a way off yet!

I know how you feel, since it was how I felt when I got my Cobra. After some upgrades it fights well and I can haul 40 tonnes of cargo, so I'm pretty happy with it. I should hit my first million credits today and I'm thinking of selling the Cobra soon and getting a Type 6 hauler just to speed up the money making process.

Keep having fun!

I was the same. Although I've now bought and sold everything up to the Asp I have kept my Cobra and go back to it regularly. Remember your 500k won't go so far upgrading it but you should make money faster and have more fun doing it.

I just bought an Asp last night. Looked at the upgrade costs and was dismayed. I'm going to use my Cobra for killing bad guys and use the proceeds to outfit the Asp. Eventually I'll use the Asp for trading, again using the profit to outfit more, then go exploring. I'm never getting rid of my Cobra, though.

Also got a T6 stowed in my 'home' system, but that's not where I am at present, and it'd be no good in my current location as it's too 'hot' here. The T6 is hardpoint deficient.

I like how you have definite goals and your approach to achieving them.

Thanks. Oh yeah, you bet I will be having fun in this new Cobra! I don't anticipate selling it when I eventually get a new ship, unlike the hauler which I was not really sentimental about.

I know that 500k isn't much in terms of upgrades, especially as I like to keep a big buffer in reserve for trading capital and insurance, but it should be enough to get the basics for trading and at this point it's all about unlocking some more earning potential. I quite pleased with the way I have managed my finances in ED. Lower risk, slow and steady progress. I think I might be applying some hard lessons learned in RL to the game!

Congrats! I got my cobra last week and have slowly upgraded it to be combat capable and have pulled in 350k in combat profits after an hour or so. I am used to combat in more agile ships but the speed means you get to choose your engagements so I haven't been in a lot of danger as of yet.

Once I upgrade it a bit further I hope to match what I was making from trading in it (about 550k per hour).

It's a nice ship and once I find a station that sells multi cannons I can replace the missile racks that seem to eat into my profits.

Yes, the Cobra is a fine ship. I will never part with mine - even after upgrading to an Asp I still feel much more comfortable in my Cobra.

Took it out last weekend for a week long exploration trip (first time I've ventured out) - did a couple of hours per night through the week. Brought it home this morning and made 5 million credits when selling the data! There's some serious money to be made out there...

Congratulations OP, and others who have recently got their Cobra's!!

Not only is it a great all rounder, which I'd never part from, but IMHO the Cobra is Elite in a nut shell, especially to us 84's out there.

Enjoy guys!

Regards

I part exchanged the Cobra for my Asp - At some point I will get one again, as it's such an iconic ship in the Elite universe.

Yep, exactly. I would count myself as an 84'er - in reality, it was probably more '86 or '87, but it was on a BBC B, so I think that counts. Was heavily into Elite and Frontier on my Amiga too, and FFE. Always loved getting to the Cobra in Frontier and FFE.

It's really a nice feeling when you are able to upgrade to the ship you really want.
Just be sure to keep back enough Cr to cover losing it a couple of times.

In the short time I had a Cobra, I really took a shine to it, but I had to sell it to get enough part-ex for my exploration Asp. I've got a note written on the inside cover of my notepad of the spec to buy that Cobra again once I get back home, and this time I'll be keeping it.
