NO seriously guys.
I've got the custom bindigs text file open in notepadd ++ and I just did a bunch of changes and nothing is showing.

WHere's it go What's happening man?
 
The game reads the files on startup and writes any changes back when it terminates, any changes you make inbetween are purely for your own amusement :D

Does anyone have an XML parser that can read my old file and uh you know where the parameter has the same name, us eth old value, and where there is a new value name use the default value or null?

And why is that a third patry thing?
It's like there should be an "import bindings" option and then you know, the new stuff highlighted and conflicts highlighted, and the BOB'S your aunty's live-in lover.

I should not have to go through and set up three hundred key bindings or try to parse a 1217 line file looking for mismatches by eye.

I a smart guy, and I make cool stuff, I contribute here all the bloody time, I know the traps and I do my best to avoid them but this is garbage.

So what you're trying to tell us is that you don't have a local and cloud backup of your bindings.

Seriously though, it takes five minutes to rebind everything. I have to alt-tab out the client to set up my vJoy devices too.
 
I think I've read somewhere that you get an BindingLoadingErrors.log file if you start the game with a missing controller. And this file seems to interfere with attemps to re-assign keys. I will quote:

After having no issues with loosing my control binds for well over a year, today I lost my bindings. It happened just after I upgraded to 3.0.3. I also made a keyboard change from a Saitek gamer keyboard to a mechanical keyboard, not sure if that has anything to do with it. I've been trying various things mentioned in this thread and others but so far have not been able to get the backup of my binding files to work.
I am seeing the following messages in the BindingLoadingErrors.log:

I am using a T16000M stick (not the HOTAS version), a Tflight HOTAS and a micro pro device flashed with mmjoy firmware. I have had no issues with lost controls until today. It looks to me that the game isn't finding the T16000M. When I go into the control menu, it will show the Tflight as an option, but not the T16000M.


UPDATE - FIXED!!
More searching turned up a 5 page thread on this issue from the 3.0 beta. To paraphrase what I did to get my controls to work again:
You have to remove the entries listed in the BindingLoadingErrors.log.


I opened custom.1.8.binds, custom.2.0.binds and custom.3.0.binds in notepad and did an edit/replace.


Search Device="06A38000"


Replace with Device="{NoDevice}" in the custom.1.8 binds, custom.2.0.binds and custom.3.0.binds.


Re-check the error log after loading the game, and if there are other errors, repeat the edit/replace all for any new Search Device errors.


It looks like any device GUID errors stop the "Custom" file (s) from being recognized and/or loaded.

Too late for me. Installed the new Logitech version of the Saitek drivers, because all the shabby yokes and pedals were unresponsive.

I do have a local backup, and actually everything was fine on 3.0 and the first few updates, but 3.05 has made a total mess of it.

@MonkeyMan - yeah it's not forever, BUT I got some weirdish bindings like have target prev and next sub-system "the wrong way round" so that my muscle memory does 6 clicks to target power plant, but if you ask me which way round it was I couldn't tell you until I get it wrong in an emergency. "Oh I used to have it the other way" after a week without a firefight. And you should get that - I've seen your rig, you've got a bloody steering wheel and a gear stick on your desk.

And camera bindings. Yeesh.
So I had it working okay, but with a couple of "Jeeze doing a smooth circle around an object is a bit tricky" so I borrowed the kid's hand held controller, but while most of my mapping plan was an improvement, some stuff was still a bit "left handed".
And it's been too long between uses. Did I have left up mapped to up or zoom in err no up is out and down is in but up needs to be up on one side but which side was it?

Frontier - this stuff grrrr.

It's like when we got a new fridge and it opened on the other side and we had to uh. You know take the door off and re mount it on the other side upside down, but we I lost one of the hole blanking plugs and the missus didn't let up about the gap toothed look of the brand new fridge.
Months.
Months I had to listen to that until she parked someone in and they keyed the car.
Very happy to see the blamethrower turned on someone else.

In the name of domestic harmony can we get an "import bindings" function?
 
Just checked my bindings folder and spotted some errors.

Just deleted the .binds files I no longer use.

I guess if you occasssionally swap out your controllers, then you’ll get the bind errors file and a backup of the offending .binds file/s written.

This is a second attempt - second hour, and I'm still on the buggy.
Pitch needed to be inverted.
The key I need for Toggle turrent was assigned to Quick Comms.
I've been doing what I can in the game, but I have had to jump out a bunch of times to use the Notepad ++ search function to find the conflicting binding.

I don't mind building this once - it's a space ship with a lot of systems. I get it.

I even don't mind reaching a dead end and having to re-think my approach.

What I resent is the waste of re-doing the same things.

I resent setting booby traps for myself.
SRV pitch being the wrong way round. - how long before I discovered that?

Oh awesome - Now I got my SRV turret working, and my mouse is aimning the way I like (yes it's opposite to the joystick - what's your point?)

Can I have target on tyhe mouse wheel and left and right being primary and secondary?

OKay now the missus has come out and turned off the speakewrs, because I turned off the "DTS 3D sound thing, and it is no longer going to the Rift" Well - it was quiet in the cans, needed about 5 dB over all. but a master volume isn't included. and I didn'realise it was now routing to the Genelecs and Sub.

I'm going through the same thing - for about the 20th time.
I keep fine tuning my bindings and try to keep them matched between my PC & PS4.
Keeping them in step is a nightmare, especially when they disappear for no reason on the PC.

PS I used to keep a copies on the PC but they got so out of date it's not worth it.

I do that too actually! I guess I've just gotten used to it - 5 Windows PCs, on different versions of Windows with all the joy that brings makes me just... adapt and copy-paste files after building up the muscle memory... I haven't had any issues with 3.0.5 though.

I hear you - for me, it's the galaxy map bindings on my CAD mouse/stick/thing (the Space Explorer). They're mostly the same as the thruster options, but yeah - it's taken me two years to learn which direction to push the axis when binding. I actually moved the wheel to a separate machine - the set-up was great, but it was also cumbersome and not really worth the effort strapping myself in, outside of extended surface-scavenging sessions (although I did paint the wood panels the same shade as the walls in my mancave). If I fancy a bit of Colin McRae in spaaaaaaaaace these days, I just boot to my other PC at the desk where the wheel lives and do my doughnuts on that one.

As for the camera bindings, get yourself one of these. Combined with LasseB's Sx2vJoy, it's just amazing for camera panning and the like. It's also perfect for FA-off flight control. ;)

Are you running a Steam Purchased copy of the game?

If yes... Make sure that your Steam Client has actually updated the game with the latest version. Using the ED launcher outside of the Steam Client to perform updates is NOT a good idea and can lead to file corruption problems with your Steam version. If it does have the latest version, you should still use the Steam Client to "Verify Files" in your ED install folder.

You can safely launch the game directly using the ED Launcher, but whenever you see the PLAY button displaying UPGRADE, quit the launcher, open your Steam client and let it handle the update download.

Once the download and install is complete, when you reload the ED Launcher, it will display PLAY again and be using the latest version of the game.

Doing this will also prevent any loss of your Keybindings file, which is also a symptom of using the Launcher to update with instead of Steam.
