Bindings despair

Hi guys,

I must admit, the bindings is causing me a serious problem now, when it never has before.

What's happening is: I load the game up on PC. I have a Logitech 310 in now, as the PS4 controller seems to have too many conflicts on it. The bindings say: Default Context. I set the binding to work well.
I want to triangle and left to bring up galaxy map, so I turn the 'Enable Context Menu' off.
The title of the bindings now say: Custom. All of a sudden, it forgets it if I log off the game, or even go back to work on the controls more. The mouse widget disappears and I have to reset it. Everything is back to square one.

What is going on? Anyone have any ideas as to how best to do things, as I simply don't want to accept the original settings, and I am getting beyond annoyed with the fact this should happen in a modern game in 2018!

If it's not saving the custom bindings, it's possible that you have a conflict in your bindings directory. Have you tried to save your binds file, perhaps kept a copy of it in there and renamed it?

The custom settings are saved in the "Custom.2.0.binds" file. Additionally, the game references that file according to the second (IIRC) line inside the actual file so even if you've changed the file name in windows, the game will think there are two custom files and will get confused. If you've done any name changes in that directory, go in and check that the name in the actual file reflects the name that you have given the file in windows.

That's the only thing I can think of...

Edit: I guess they've changed the extension to Custom.3.0.binds. I hadn't looked since the update. :)

Possible. I think I did that at one stage but thought I had corrected it. I'm going to just delete everything and start again, but please keep the ideas coming in, as clearly this is something I'm going to have to learn lots about - I'd rather be playing the game though!

my mate has this issue aswell i believe, everytime he starts up Elite, his bindins are gone ingame. if he goes to the folder, they are there, he renames them, and then they show up.

Binding Loading Errors (irrelevant)
StartPreset
Custom.3.0
Dual.Shock.ControllerYaw.3.0

Starting off - that Binding loading errors file is probably not irrelevant. Delete it, restart and check if it comes up again. In this case, a look inside the file may be useful.

Next, what's the content of the StartPreset file?

And finally, your dual shock controller file looks unusual to me (but I have very little experience in this). ED however looks inside the .binds files and checks the header line it finds there (tripped me up when I still stored my backups in the binds folder....).

What happened to me at 3.0 was that ED apparently checks the connected controllers at startup, and if it can't find them in the order it expects them (all of them!), it throws a loading error and reverts to the default bindings. There's a thread about that in the bug report section. Pretty much messes up those people who use an additional gamepad for camera control and only connect/switch on that gamepad when the actually want to use it :(.

Ahhhh. I see. That explains a lot, Ashnak. I'll just keep my PS4 in another folder.

REWASD
. Now supports PlayStation controllers. Take care and Elite!

Useful for some but this is a Logitech I'm on about.

This will allow you to use your PS4 Controller. If windows displays the Logitech as a 360-pad your Logitech pad will also work.

Well, before you delete everything, I'd just check to see that the name inside the file is unique for any / all .binds files in the Bindings directory. :)

For reference, the line you are looking for is:

<Root PresetName="Custom" MajorVersion="3" MinorVersion="0">

It's the second line in the file when you open it with Notepad.

Right

THANKS

Especially to Ashnak. It's fixed and I've learned a lot. It remembers now. Great.

I've just dumped all the old files in an old folder and they can stay there; if I use the DS4 in future I'll just swap out - this time moving the old files!

Thanks this explains the issues I've had this week. It was very puzzling, never lost my bindings before.

It’s imperative you connect your peripherals in the same connections (Elite will not recognize your peripherals if you swap inputs) before you launch Dangerous and it’s equally important not to handle devices before the in-game Main Menu appears. If you connect additional devices during game-play you may have to reconnect said devices before you launch Dangerous in the future.
