Biological hotspots??

Starting my Odyssey, I've been working on various things. Toying with my Maverick suit, searching for mats. Dominator is pretty straight forward run and gun suit but now I want to test out my Artemis suit and test out the exobiology. Not sure how to start. I've seen biology spots on planets but are there hotspots similar to that like mining? Am I going about this wrong?

FSS a system & look at the completed system map to find a planet with bio.

Fly to the planet & FSS it (fire the probes) then in that probe firing view, use Q & E (default on PC, check your control config) to change the 'heatmap' between each bio type. Go land in a bright blue area & look for clumps of whatever you want. You scan three samples of that type (there is a minimum distance between each sample), then move on to the next type.

Once you have completed your scans you can visit vista genomics to sell your data, there is no other use for it.

If you prefer, you can just use the ship or srv comp scanner to log that you have discovered each type in the codex. Or do both if you like :)

Yeah, while there are various bios on planets, there's no way to find a "hotspot" the blue map is essentially a location map showing areas where the bio can be found, but not in what density, so it's a gamble whether you will find a densely populated area or sparse. If you have trouble finding a particular bio also keep in mind some bio prefer particular geo types, like rocky areas as opposed to sandy, so try different areas for hard to find bio.

What does that mean, blue map. Is that when you probe a planet/moon and see the different spots? I'm trying to get my feet wet but don't want to spend my time looking in the wrong direction if you get my drift.

I think this is what Varonica was referring to. I'm on PC but I use a Controller to navigate around. So I can use Q & E.

Thanks, I'll start looking around.

See here for a discussion and a picture of the bio heat map. Just bear in mind that it is not a heat map. FDev discarded that idea. Think of of it as a blue splodge where there is some bio of that type somewhere. The blue splodge is tainted by the terrain underneath, so that flat areas are a sort of green/turquoise and mountains are a dark blue. So if you were looking for bacteria the go for the green/turquoise, if you are going for the mountain liking plants go for the dark blue. Once you have picked an area, fly down to 100m or 200m, where the high definition graphics pop into view. You will soon get a feel for whether this planet has abundant plant life of one plant for every 100KM. If the scanner says Bark Mould expect to never find that plant. They are super rare.

I have been using the basic Artemis suit and its fine. I still haven't gone below 50% power.

IMO the biggest thing to have investment in is a really great ship designed for surface exploration. Jump distance not important if you are based from a fleet carrier. 30Ly is fine. I carry fuel scoop so I can visit all the local systems without returning to the carrier. For exobiology you are constantly landing on planets, sometimes in difficult locations so you want a robust ship.

I recommend an A-Rated Engineered ship with shields, fuel scoop, DSS, SRV hangar, 30Ly range, designed to smack into the ground. And you want the ability to "look down" as you scan the surface for stuff. I chose the Chieftain because it is robust, maneuverable, and easy to land. I also use my long-range paper thin stripped AspX when I have to, but then I have to be super careful.

When searching the surface of the planet I end up flying like this:

Also I usually keep the landing gear down to slow my forward thrust (I find mouse/keyboard thrust increments are too big). If you have flight assists turn off the auto-land feature. I could use cargo hatch to slow down thrust, but I rather land where I want anyway.
