Newcomer / Intro bit literally lost and need some wise advice :(

Hello. I recently got some confidence being very new and started trading, doing courier work and then resourcing for people. I got asked to go find a certain item so i looked to see where i could get it. i found a distance spot and so took off all proud to go collect and bring back. :)

HOWEVER, i then found myself beyond the starting system and as you can imagine, BOOM i lost my permit and cant go back to Dormi. :( So here i am in my little 'Signet' ( Cobra Mk3) worried, lost and finding myself in a part of space that seems hostile, low on resource and BIG jumps between worlds. I feel lonely scared and in the wrong place.

I need help with a safe sensible route to a fruitful system thats ideal for a newbie venturing out. A good system as a stepping stone from Dormi. One with lots of short runs for trading, plenty of mining to learn at and ideally not so hostile. A place i can still grow at before i finally do go right out there.

Is there anyone that would be willing to research this and help me out over some time and posts? I can in a while go find the actual location i am at right now so you know where to plot from. I have a fuel scoop and my Cobra is setup up for mining at the moment, probably wrongly but... :/

For those considering helping me i am currently ata port at Ehecatl. I think i am about 12 Ly from Dromi. I really dont feel like i am at an ideal spot for a newb :(

I would suggest not sticking around Ehecatl too long. That place attracts seal clubbers pretty regularly. I met the head of the New Pilots Initiative awhile back while role playing a Thargoid Collaborator cultist.

He made a point to threaten swift retribution if I caused any trouble in the system. May want to check out their home system in Meliae. Should be close by if i recall correctly and likely filled with players willing to show you the ropes.

At the edges of the bubble you will find places with loads of missions heading to a single destination. You might find your luck there.

Oh wow thank you. i will check Meliae out. I wont cause any trouble i promise. very much a pacifist and just wanting to be low key, mine, trade and be a good girl. Aint seeking to be a pest. and if they are willing to keep an eye out for me i will offer what i can in return. Thank you.

Oh no i just found that system on the map. its 112Lys from me! i only have a Cobra :( it would take years to get there. i can barely get 12 lys on one jump. gosh. :(

Land in the station of a few random systems and have a look at traffic news it'll show you all player ships in the last 24 hours. Find a nice quiet system while you find your feet as players are much more deadly than NPC's.

I'd encourage you to open a ticket to Frontier Support and explain your situation in which you got a mission to fetch something out of the reserved area and you're not able to get back.

Of course you can also abandon the mission and start fresh on whatever system you may call your new home... start engineering your Cobra's FSD and continue to play the game.

Go on solo ou private group until you have enough credits for 3 or 4 rebuys for your MKIII

That to me is close by but I've been spoiled by engineering. You can squeeze some more jump range in the cobra if you drop the fuel tank size, D rate the other modules and get an undersized shield.

Definitely pick up a fuel scoop and you should be able to safely make your way just about anywhere. If you have the credits, upgrade your FSD to the highest possible up to an class 4A. You'll be jumping almost 30 LYs before long.

Here is a cheap light build that will take you anywhere you want to be.

If you have any problems finding systems that sell upgrade a reliable rule to follow is to locate high population High Tech economy systems. They tend to have the best modules in stock.

No problem...

Hackworth Orbital in Ehecatl can sell you all you need, according to EDDB:

You may have to sell your Cobra temporarily (no big loss, except emotionally - you can re-buy it almost everywhere). Buy a Hauler and equip it with an A-Rated FSD, a 3C Fuel Scoop and a 2C bi-weave shield. Anything else and any other upgrades are optional, although putting in a 2D power plant and thrusters would let you reach Meliae easily without even refuelling - 26 ly on a single jump, and >130 ly on a full tank with maximum range jumps (much, much more if you switch to economic routing).

Like I said, you can buy all that at Hackworth Orbital shipyard and outfitters. The Hauler is a pretty capable ship - fast and very good jump range. Its classic role for the more experienced players was the "Bubble Taxi" - if you want to get anywhere inside the Bubble fast and cheap, get a Hauler. Just never try to shoot anything while flying it :).

Which is why the artificial noob zone is such a terrible idea.

I disagree - you see loads of hollow icons and nary a seal-clubber in sight. It is a good paddling-pool for new players to get comfortable with their ship, the game and it's "features".

People are warned about losing their permit if they dock outside after a rank increase, don't blame the game if people don't pay attention.

@Crimson foxx - don't worry, there is little chance of being ganked in the game, only a few specific systems attract PKers. Just enjoy the learning experience of wandering the bubble (but remember to change your selection in the galaxy map to "fastest" and not "economical" routes). If you do get overwhelmed then you can always "Clear Save" and start over again in the noob-zone (things are so much easier the second time around).

Don't worry OP. The Cobra Mk III is a fine ship. It can easily survive the opponents that the game will send after you. It's main strength is its speed and manoeuvrability. If things get scary: put 4 pips to ENG and 2 to SYS and boost... boost... boost your way out of trouble. The build I linked below is the configuration I flew for 6 months when I started (in 2015). It's configured as an armed trader/smuggler and it can defend itself just fine for some additional income (bounty vouchers). Just don't try to take on big ships or wings of ships in it, use its 444 m/s boost speed to evade. At 22 ly (18 ly loaded) travelling around the bubble is no problem. I don't know how much credits you have but this configuration costs 7.6 million (380,000 rebuy) but you can start with lower rated modules and work towards it (always prioritise for speed). Have fun.
This link shows the top 10 dangerous systems (top right under "Security Report"). Don't go there or switch to solo mode first if you want to avoid gankers.

Ehecatl was my first home after leaving Dromi and in my Cobra I soon had profitable trade runs to and from L119-33 Oested Port and Nanabozo also did a quick rags to riches exploration run and earned 120M which bought my first Krait and got Trade Elite and 1.6B without any mining so I wouldnt leave Hackworth till you have got your creds improved you will also gain both Federal and Imperial rank as there are a mix of systems there

Wouldn't it be better if just had working security and regions that were actually safe, instead of an artificial zone? And more than just the one?

a) There is. It's called solo.
b) if you don't like solo, there are several non-PvP private groups, e.g. https://elitepve.com/
c) otherwise, if you restrict yourself to open, there's no way short of removing all high end ships and engineering (like in the starter zone). An enginered murderboat can destroy an unengineered and unprepared beginner ship (or an NPC) before the FSD has cooled down. In extreme cases (like a low level NPC pirate in a Cobra scanning my Krait Mk.II nose-to nose) even before the cooldown has started... The best security isn't going to stop this. You can (with the right ship) kill players and NPCs right in front of the station. You'll take some damage from the station, but that is survivable if you are prepared for it.

The pirate/outlaw is a valid career/playstyle choice in ED, as indicated by the mere existence of Anarchy systems. Sure, you could upgrade the system security a couple of notches and better match them to the system's security level, but that won't stop players from killing other players without their consent. That doesn't mean I like it - if I want to avoid being interdicted, I go to solo or a friendly PG.

Yes it would. One of the key things wrong with the game imho. In the original Elite you were quite rightly scared to go to an anarchy system ('cos it was a dangerous place). In Elite: Dangerous I pay almost zero attention to the type of system I'm jumping to because they all feel the same. So yes, I'd love to see secure systems have WAY better reponse, sufficient to force the pirates and gankers into anarchy systems. Then what you do is you put something really valuable in those anarchy systems (e.g. have inflated buy prices for LTD's) so people have to decide if they want to risk being attacked for bigger profits or play it safe.

Sadly however we don't have that. And in the absence of that I think the idea of the starter systems is a perfectly reasonable band aid solution.

Fuel scoop?
Also... play solo until you find your feet, or look into joining a PVE group like Mobius.

Have you joined the Galactic Academy Discord Server advertised at the top of this forum? Strongly Suggest you do. Very helpful people and someone is almost all the time to help.

As someone suggested it might be worth opening a support ticket regarding your mission...
