Bit wary about signing on again

Not played Elite much of late but decided to get back in and see what's changed (so much, so very much....) but I've experienced the weirdest bug / problem / nightmare.

Has anyone else had their ship just stop responding to all inputs: both joystick and keyboard? Right after that, it started ghosting commands such as raising and lowering landing gear, silent running (!!) and opening the flaming cargo hatch.

This right at an interdiction which was fortunately a system authority vessel, but at that point I'd decided I'd had enough and signed out.

Also - what the heck with C&P? One ship wandered across my bows as I was blowing up a wanted 'conda and I have an unpayable fine.... Yeesh.

This reintroduction is not proving to be fun, I might go back to Skyrim.

Welcome back, CMDR.

Sounds like you got the rough end of the stick. There have been problems with USB devices, especially if you have many connected to the game. You could try resetting to mouse & and keyboard only and then re-plug your devices. Just guessing here.

All fines and bounties must be paid at Hutton Orbital. Take your Federal Corvette, it'll be faster.
(There's a new filter in GalMap; Services, use it to search for Interstellar Factors. Find one and go there to clean up)

Sounds like your ship is haunted. You should crash it into the nearest star.

I had the weird input bug and had to unplug my hotas and MFD. Start the game enter into the game. Save/Exit. plug everything in and start the game up load my custom config. It fixed a lot of the issues.

Always lots of strange issues when a patch first comes out.

That's why I'm out in the black scanning entire sectors until things settle down.

I would stick with skyrim I had great hopes for beyond but in the end it looks better but all the gameplay they have added is more grind.

I'm out

YES this happens for me. Stops responding. After that, plug in hotas, un plug it... then realise that all my keybinds have reset. Have to program it all again.

I have no idea if there's a way to export settings, then import them if things go blip like this. It's very very annoying... also due to me remapping pretty much most of the controls.

I’ve always experienced an issue where my controller would lock out randomly, and usually at very inconvenient times. What causes this, for me anyway, is that the ED client somehow gets bumped from being the program that is first priority (idk the actual term, basically it becaomes a page in the background of another program or alert). Going to the task bar and clicking on the ED client brings back control but by then it’s usually too late. The other problem I have is that ED randomly minimizes itself once every 3 hours or so. Idk what the hell thats about but it does.

C&P is simply meaning there are consequences to actions now, that's all there is, you'd get punished bountied before as well, however that bounty didn't really 'do' much, now it does, but you can get it paid off fairly simple.

Do your bindings, then exit the game. Open explorer and navigate to: C:\Users\YOURUSERNAME\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings - in there you should see a "Custom.binds" file (it should be the one with the most recent edit date). Make a copy of that file and paste it into the folder. Rename the copy to for example reflect the hardware used (my_x52.binds, my_x360pad.binds, my_hotas.binds - you get the idea), and then open up the file in the editor of your choice and replace the second line:

<Root PresetName="Custom"> with whatever name you gave the file, like so:
<Root PresetName="my_x52">

Save the file as a .binds file (Windows Notepad might append a .txt, so check that it doesn't) and keep a backup copy in a safe place. Now start the game and go to options - controls, and in the presets scrolldown menu you should now have an my_x52 entry. You'll never lose your settings again and you can have more than one set up for different hardware combinations. Just make sure to create fresh backups on changing something.

It turned out that Elite randomly decides to not be the active screen mid-game - I'm running an Oculus Rift so have a window running Elite on my middle monitor. NO idea as yet about why it decides to move off the active screen, but I'll figure... I hope.

.....wanders off to start re-engineering everything....

Yes, very often. To the point where I have had to rebind chaff, scb, heatsink and mouse look to different joystick buttons. Mouse look was the first to go - the little joystick on my x52 pro throttle would randomly stop responding. Insoecting the controller in windows would show that nothing was wrong, but in Elite it would not respond. With chaff/heatsinks/scb they would fire randomly, even though again back in windows I would never see the buttons trigger.

I reckon that it's a hardware issue (the x52 is about the worst joystick ever built in terms of reliability) where the usb device probably goes offline and gets remapped, and also a software issue as Elite doesn't realise that the joystick suddenly vanished and came back as something else.

This is exactly the problem I encounter. And he controls stop working. I have this problem waaaaay less often if I use steam to launch the game instead of Oculus home. If I’m playing in desktop mode it doesn’t do this, but sometimes decides to minimize the game for whatever reason.

That's not something I've tried and I'll give that go. Thanks :)

That's weird unless you have a Saitek/Madcatz/Logitech stick :D

Nah, for reals, sounds like something may be up with your setup, does it behave otherwise?

Ummmm.... running the x-55 throttle with the logitech 3D pro joystick ('cos the flipping x-55 joystick is a pile of pants...)

(I found out it's stopped responding because the active window (running an Oculus) stops being active. Now I just need to work out why THAT happens.)

I tried exercising but that resulted in more weird noises and strange smells, so tried exorcising instead. Now I randomly Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah-nagl fhtagn get black outs

I think maybe you should take your ship to Earth and orbit above the Pacific Ocean, scan for the sunken city of R'lyeh.
