Go to the system it supposed to be in.... then go check out those Unidentified Signal Sources you pick up while super cruising about. One may be a black box... (or a pirate waiting for ya !)
Aye, just look for the uss signals, you will find it eventually. Out of all these missions I found this the hardest to find, as in most rare.
Edit: use your grappling hook thingy, I forget the name.... press the 'home' button with Mouse and keyboard.

Just fly about investigating Unidentified Signal Sources.
I've done about 3 of these missions so far. often you have to check a good half-dozen U.S.S. until you get one with the black box. occasionally this means finding some other loot (though usually it just means pirates ready to jack your cargo!)

you need to extend your Cargo Scoop (Home key on your number pad by default I think).
Then you will see a little display on the left hand side that shows your relative position to the cargo, fly slowly and carefully so that it fills the blue box and voila! Cargo Scooped!
Be aware - Black boxes and other 'recovery' missions tag the item as 'stolen', so if you get scanned by local security forces while you enter the star port, you will be heavily fined. you need to be able to either go in to the station 'cold' (to make it harder for Law Enforcement to scan you) or fast (ditto).

I've found these easy enough. Like others say, they should be in a wreckage site somewhere in the listed system for the mission. It's in the mission description. It will be at a USS as others have noted. Just use cargo scoop. They're fairly easy to find in my experience.
Be careful though, I think they count as illegal goods. If you get scanned by authorities, you can possibly get a fine I believe.

Use your cargo scoop on your ship. its an inbuilt feature in every ship and you deploy it the same way as you do with your landing gear. ( Check your control settings for what key to press)
target the canister then on your hud you will se a new little window. You can se the target/ canister in that window and use it to steer your ship towards the target and pick it up. Don't fly to fast and do not try to ram the canister as it might explode. Slow speed and accurate steering.

The Left hand holo will become a targeting thing, align the black box to the centre of the cross hairs and approach slowly (under 40m/s)

So much for their indestructability.
Here is a little tip.... Collect the black box... but DONT rush back to deliver it.
Keep checking out every USS (you will be surprised how many black boxes are thrown at you) - the system seems to keep going thinking you have not finished yet.
You can sell these at the black market for a tidy little sum (remember to hand over the mission one 1st).... (just keep an eye on the time)

how much fine do you get if scanned?
Technically you don't have to go for the named system to complete these types of mission. If you happen to have one in your cargo bay from a previous USS you can turn it in on the spot.
This goes for all the types too, rebel and military plans, rare art, prototype weapons etc.
It all depends how good you are at smuggling goods under the noses of your friends and allies.

Slow down to 30 km/s in SC and wait for USS's to appear. You don't have to fly around to find them. They just spawn around you. Top tip with black box and rebel transmission missions. If you have spare black boxes or rebel transmission in your hold, you can complete these mission immediately. They don't care where they came from!
So ive hit about 15 USS,s and haven't found 1 black box despite having the mission and double checking the location...
