Black holes - how close can you get?

So I have parked up in NGC 6357 and headed over to a system with 3 black holes (already discovered). This is the first time I have scanned black holes, so I am wondering how close can you get to them? My detailed scanner did not kick in until just under 2LS but I was a bit nervous going any further in case my ship overheated and exploded.

Also regarding discovery costs. If a planetary object has already been discovered do you still get the full amount minus the 50% first finders bonus? For instance I know earth likes are around 60,000 CR so for a first find bonus that comes to 90,000CR but if I scan a previously discovered earth like would I still get 60,000CR?

Thanks

hi cmdr

up to 0,2 ls close before you get the emergency drop out

yes you get the 60 000 CR even if it was previosly scanned , you only miss out the 30 000 first discovery bonus

fly safe out there commander

Have never tried to get too close to a BH tbh, scared of losing my data :) But this is probably a good indication : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmQlglgb8wI

As for discoveries, yes you still get the 60k for scanning (with DSS) a previously discovered ELW :) So, still worth it for the credits and the view :)

EDIT: Dammit, ninja'd :p

I too was scared of black holes until the last one I discovered.
I approached too close, and was dropped out of SC, but no damage occurred, nor did I overheat. I was able to get within a couple hundred Km, when another warning appeared, which I don't recall now.
Heat was at 57, or so, so I stopped, took a few SS, and left.

In my latest tour I got to within 90 km before I chickened out.

@EUS, did you get the Body Exclusion Zone? That just says: Welcome to the end of the galaxy. This space is reserved for Planetary Landings. We hear you knocking, but you can't come in.

That was probably it, I wasn't sure what would happen, so I backed of a couple hundred Km.

If the body exclusion zone is lifted for black holes I hope for something way cooler than merely landing on them. A really cool animation of my ship getting spaghettified before the insurance screen appears at the very least.

I got to 24.9 km from two black holes. At that point I received a warning message something like ' No Body Region' or something!
I couldn't get any closer and then had to use an escape vector to get away.

I've bounced up against the body exclusion zone on a black hole at 27km.
As mentioned above, in this game, space stations are more dangerous than black holes!
Neutron stars, on the other hand - always treat with extreme caution. They'll cook you up quick if you get too close.

Black holes - how close can you get?

My Admiral advises:

Technically Captain, up to the Schwarzschild radius, R(s), where normal space-time ends and you enter the black hole proper.

Easily calculated by R(s)=2GM/C^2, where M is the mass of the black hole, G, Newton's universal gravitational constant, and C, the speed of light.

Your on board AI will do the calculations for you.

A word of warning: at the Schwarzschild radius, time for you will appear normal, but eons will pass for those you love.

Good luck Captain. Fly hard and live long.

To summarise:

If you get too close time goes all wibbly wobbly and by the time you escape, Elite: Dangerous will be fully patched with lots of new features for explorers available.

My Admiral advises:

Wibbly-wobbly neither a technical nor military term Commander. But that is an adequate summary.

Fly hard and live long.

The closest I've been is actually about 200km. Funny, you'd think you'd be inside the event horizon already. They should make a roche limit where your ship just falls apart due to intense gravitational stresses on the hull.

It depends on the size of the black hole, I'm sure. I've been to 29Km of a small one. Black holes can exist right down to micrometre level, but small black holes are expected to 'evaporate'. So you could get within millimetres of a small black hole, and if it only weighs hundreds of tons the gravity effect would be minimal, but the gravity gradient would be super sharp at very close levels. Super-massive black holes have a gentle gravity gradient, so you would be able to get right up to the event horizon - though presumably the energy required to get away from the event horizon would be similar to the energy required to accelerate you to lightspeed, so you would never escape even if you didn't actually pass within the event horizon initially!

I just got within 5.5km of a black hole... and still hadn't hit the "Body Exclusion Zone".

I stopped there, and backed off... as it was making me seriously uncomfortable. Wouldn't want to lose my ship (and 2 months of data) due to some boundary check not kicking in, lol.

From watching some exploration videos on YouTube, it seems the game stops you before you enter the event horizon. Kinda disappointing, lol.

Something of a.... non-event....?

IGMC....

My Admiral advises:

Beyond the event horizon, ancient Earth's GR suggests that time might reverse, but this may just be a co-ordinate failure in the mathematics. Nobody can be sure.

We have had a **** ******* Navy Commander approaching a black hole since 2700. It was a one-way mission undertaken centuries ago, and accepted by him to avoid dishonour.

We are still gathering data. The photons still arrive, but are severely red-shifted. A cutter is kept in the region to intercept them.

It would be inadvisable to approach the event horizon / Schwarzschild radius.

Fly hard and live long Commander.

Well, given the fact that rescuing a pilot who ejected beyond the event horizon would be a physical impossibility, it's probably a good thing :)
