Newcomer / Intro Black Market question

Hello, I have been playing the game for a couple months now but this is my first post to a forum. I have been trying to unlock one of the engineers known as The Dweller. I am currently at 4/5 on the requirements. I recently took out a pirate, and scooped up some of his illegal cargo (three containers of limpets). I have been flying from system to system trying to find a black market that was available - getting fined left and right for having illicit cargo - and I finally found one in Ekonir, the Morey Vision station. This Blackmarket is available but it says I have nothing to sell! These items clearly say “stolen” in my cargo, and I am getting fined for them. So why I can’t I sell them?

Cargo that can otherwise be bought/sold at a Station won't be eligible for the Black Market. So you can't sell Battle Weapons at a Black Market located in a system that doesn't prohibit Battle Weapons.

Stolen cargo is a different matter, but as for your cargo... stolen limpets? Since limpets are bought and sold via Advanced Maintenance, that may have something to do with it.

Dump the limpets and try this - find out what is illegal in the system you're trying to sell at, then just go buy some and bring it in to the Black Market. You can check on prohibited commodities in the System Map by selecting the station.

Limpets can't be sold on the blackmarket.

The easiest place to find good blackmarkets with lots of commodities that are illegal are Federal stations. Just buy narcotics, weapons or slaves at an anarchy system and ship them to a Fed station with a blackmarket.

If you are getting fines then you need to learn to dock more quickly to avoid getting scans (a few speed limits may get broken in the process!)

I did it recently. I bought personal weapons. The first two black markets went OK, but then every one I visited was off-line for no explicable reason. I must have visited more than 20 before I could work with 5 of them. It was really infuriating, and it just made an evening of frustrating and disappointing game-play. I can't understand what's on the devs'minds to make it like that.

A really easy way to unlock the black markets is to accept a cargo delivery mission then just abandon it. The cargo becomes illicit and you can sell it at a black market. You can do that without even leaving the station!

some of the powers auto lock all black markets in the systems they control...

I could well be going bonkers here but I seem to recall reading a patch note at some point that said they had stopped that from being possible??

That was "fixed" in the 2.4 update, patch notes specifically mentioned it being no longer possible:

Station Services

  • It is no longer possible to sell stolen items that you received as part of a mission on that station's black market

(D.G.Cerberus is not going bonkers. ;) )

Provided you can see the map for the system, it will show if a station's blackmarket has been disabled. The external tools, like EDDB, are unreliable for this.

Thanks for the info... the limpets I had obtained from a pirate who Interdicted me & tried to steal my cargo. I enjoy giving in to interdictions, the bounties are often quite a bonus. He dropped some cargo that showed up as "stolen" so I figured it was Blackmarket fodder. I ended up just buying a single slave from a port in an anarchy system, flew to Ekonir (sp?) and sold it there. The whole purpose was to unlock The Dweller. After succeeding, and seeing what he had to offer, I felt it was a bit of a waste of time.
