Black Market Shipyards

It makes no sense whatsoever that we can't have black market shipyards in a universe as large as Elite Dangerous! A literal 1:1 scale of the galaxy this would also make it so the powerplay service wasn't compulsory in order to get the ship you wanted. They shouldn't come with any less performance or any more performance issues, they should be a stock corvette or whatever set at a higher price. Then if people wanted to they could powerplay the faction if they wanted to get the ship at a discount or just for fun roleplay.

super power ships have nothing to do with power play. power play just has some modules that are all but maybe 2 worthless to all but the smallest ships.

the black market mechanic though is mostly just a mechanism to create a goal to justify some game play around landing at a station while avoiding scans. you sell illegal commodities at a little higher profit (or at all if stolen)..

i'd be down for black markets being a place players can sell absolutely anything to and it's persistent... and anyone can buy from that particular market only the things still available that players sold to it and nothing else. the market pays the seller some calculated amount and then auctions off the goods with some min value daily to any interested parties.

the black market then uses the profits to calculate the next purchases from players... so busy markets that have auctions that drive the price up feedback on sellers and encourage them to come back to sell more.

the game can also cause increased police activity on popular black markets, as well as increased piracy... destabilising the system. Which will create a natural brake to the mechanic in any one spot for too long.

Buy prices from BMs are not profitable.

Black markets are 99% used/weaponised for BGS in the current game state.

For pirates -> 99% of the stolen stuff just goes to the carriers' BMs... and then 99% used for BGS purposes :D

That and random illegal salvage we pick up.
Clearing out the carrier's hold after a trip the salvage separates into 3 parts; Normal stuff which is dropped at whatever station you happen to be at, Dubious stuff which needs to taken to an Anarchy and the stuff marked stolen that needs a black market to dispose of.

If they are the only place you can actually sell an item then profit tends not to be an issue, just trying to offload some useless and essentially valueless cargo is useful.

We do have something for this, to an extent. Go to a shipyard in an independent anarchy system and there's a very good chance you can pick up some superpower ships there.

The Cutter's seats still know that your bum cheeks aren't of those of a Duke (for example) and won't let you fly of course, but in terms of a game that's always going to be a shortcut too far to get around.
