Horizons Black screen crash after selecting Play

Hi

I do not seem to have permission to post in the support forum and being desperatefor some assistance I have posted in the only forum that will allow me to sorry about that,
the mods can move this if they can to a more suitable section but for now here we go…

I stopped playing a very healthy and fully functioning ED Horizons around the end of May this year due to various reasons and on Friday I thought I would start up again only to
be greeted with a black screen and the inevitable crash, this happened every time I login and try to start the program, it also happens on the Steamversion I also own, now the only
thing on my system that changed was that I upgraded my EVGA GT970 card to an EVGA GTX 1070 card other than that my system is as it was in May.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled EDH over thirteen times over the weekend and have tried all the suggestions given in response to my support Ticket No 00000176838, I have
installed both inside (where it originally was) and outside the ProgramFiles x86 folder, I have under clocked my 1070 card, added port forwarding to my router for EDH on Port 5100
as per the FAQ, white listed every file in the Frontier folder and added firewall permission rules to the executables and run them both with and without admin permissions,
all to no avail so if anyone has any suggestions at all that I can try I would be very grateful

Thanks for reading the above missive.

I had a very similar sounding problem only last week. I opened a ticket with Frontier support and followed their instructions. But by chance I noticed I got the same crash in another Hi-resolution Graphics intensive game so clearly it wasn't an Elite Dangerous problem and I closed the ticket. I further noticed if I turned the screen resolution down in ED I didn't get the crash. Eventually I found an event in the Windows system Event log indicating a Nvidia graphics subsystem problem. In the end I replaced my Graphics card a GTX970 with a new MSI GTX1080 TI Gaming X 11Gb . Since the no problems. So on Balance I'd guess you new graphics card may be faulty. Try turning down the screen resolution in ED to see if the problem goes away. If it does I'd strongly suspect your graphics card. Check the System Event log for the time of your black screen crash. Do you have any video system /Nvidia Graphics events logged? Maybe you can swap the card for another one under warranty. If you still have your old graphics card it may be worth swapping that in, if there is no crash it further suggests the new graphics card may be the problem. Generally BLACK screens / Loss of signal to the monitor suggest the graphics card. New cards can be faulty. MAy also be worth downloading a copy of GPUZ and monitoring your graphics card temperature .. My card was fine, but I see there are quite a few posts on t'interweb concerning EVGA GTX1070 cards black screening due to oveheating. EVGA will either send you thermal pads for the card, or will replace the card under warranty if you contact them. Good Luck !

Hi
Thanks for the reply its appreciated, as for the graphics card I have not had any issues
with it in any other game and some of them are pretty hard on graphics cards which was
one of the reasons for getting this one, the other thing is that I get no windows logs what
so ever and the cards temps have yet to hit 70+degrees as the fans would go full blast
well before then.

One thing I forgot to post was my system specificationsso here goes…

OS Windows10 64bit
Motherboard ASUS Z97-PRO GAMER
CPU Intel i7 4790 Haswell
16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 Memory
Graphics Card EVGA GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5
PSU 1000w Corsair

Thanks again for replying and for the suggestions, it is a bit of an odd issue.

Just a quick update, I reinstalled the original graphics card I had in when I last ran EDH I then installed
the latest drivers so my system was back as it was when EDH ran last and I still have the black
screen crash when trying to launch EDH so I have reverted back to the GTX 1070 and my other games
are now happy again, I just which EDH was amongst them.

End result still stuck with a game that will no longer function so any suggestions would be welcome.

Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions.

Just an FYI, the first few posts with white text on a white background is invisible to me. Not everyone uses the "black background" style. :)

Sounds like you've gone through the basics, consider contacting support https://support.frontier.co.uk/kb/
Login top right via your Frontier store account, go through Knowledgebase FAQ search, if you find nothing that helps the bottom of the search suggestion box has a "contact us" button

Hi Alex

Sorry about the text I am pretty new to posting on this forum, as for contacting support I have already put in a ticket with support
and had followed their instructions for a possible fix without any success and replied to my ticket asking if there was anything else I could try
but with the 72 hour + delay I thought I would pick the brains of the forum members in case this particular issue had struck someone
who managed to figure out a fix as I am summing out of things to try.

Thanks for the reply I appreciate it, I hope the text comes through correctly this time.

Hello Jim,

I expect you have been asked this by support anyway but here is my 2 pence worth (one old codjer to another). Does the game launcher run ok prior to the game crashing? if it does have you tried the different game modes eg. SOLO, OPEN etc? I remember having to install a new launcher separately to the game some time ago so it might be worth checking you are on the right version. Also if you do get this far prior to crashing do you have a friend that you could 'borrow' his account to attempt to log on just to see if its your account that is corrupted.

Cheers, GD

I'm not sure if this is the same issue or a different one but I get a black screen in between entering and exiting the game where the rotating ship graphic should be.
The game is still 'live' and on exit I need to press <right, select> to confirm my exit from the game!

Obviously it's not a big deal but what seems strange is that it has carried over from my old install on a previous pc to a brand new install on a much higher spec'd machine now!
The only hardware similarity between the two systems is that it's the same monitor...

Hi folks

The launcher runs just fine it is when selecting any of the modes be it Horizons 64bit, Elite 64bit , Elite 32bit or Solo/Training that's when the
problem appears, although the 32bit version will usually get as far as the Frontier logo before black screening and crashing, Training mode works
just fine and although I could do with all the training I can get I would rather have the full game running but it does make me think if it could be a
blocked connection mainly because as far as I know Training mode does not connect to the game server, but I could be way of base on that idea.

I am now on reinstallation 14 or it could be 15 I don't know any longer but I will get the thing working if it kills one of us, this installation is as far
away from the Program File x86 folder as it is possible to get on my system as it is now on its own drive under just G:\Games\Elite\ Frontier ...etc
so we shall see how this one works out as it is installing as I type, computers are such fun aren't they.

I do have another copy of EDH installed under a Steam account but that hits the same issue, again this makes me think about a blocked / borked
connection link to the Frontier servers, other than that one I am out of luck mainly as I am at an age when you go to more funerals than christenings
if you follow my drift.

Once again thanks folks for the suggestions it certainly gives me more to ponder on before I pick a window for my system.

Have you by any chance changed your anti-virus or has it inadvertantly added ED to the blocked list, may be a good idea to check in the firewall.

Just an idea as I know some anti-virus's out there can be very choosy to say the least.

Hi

I know what you mean I have been a victim of that on more than one occasion, the AV I use is the same as it has been
for quite a few years now but I did make sure that the launcher and any other executables were allowed to access the
outside world and are also white listed and not scanned, in fact the entire drive is excluded along with the individual
folders and files, a bit belt and braces but like I say I have been a victim of overzealous AV / Internet security in the past.

Thank you for the idea though as it is always good to check and remove it from the list of possible suspects.

Hi Folks

I just thought I would update this post to mention that after getting an error with my Prepar3D installations regarding permissions which were set but had somehow reverted back I decided after trying to fix the Windows 10 error to just bite the bullet and reinstall everything from Windows 10 on up, the end result being that using the same EVGA 1070 card and a fresh installation of Windows 10 I now have a fully function EDH, well until the system tries to install the Windows10 Creators update anyway.

Thanks for all the support folks it helped a lot to know that someone was there willing to help.

Glad to know it worked out in the end, I'm now a little embarrassed, I did at one time know about the creators edition issue but didn't think it applied in this case -.-

Good to hear it's all working, hopefully the creators edition doesn't have anything you desperately need/want. :)
