Black Smear Gone for good?! (Rift CV1)

So today i've got my Rift replacement unit, since the one i had suffered malfunctioning.

First thing i've noticed, on my home system, that i know really well.... the black smearing is gone!!!!! I mean, i've tested the new dithering feature in beta with my old faulty unit, and that is all good. But once received my new unit today and fired up the game, the first thing that struck me was the absence of the black smearing!!! so happy!!! :D

Maybe you got a newer/revised set of panels? Or perhaps they're just better and have a good calibration.

Good stuff.

My CV1 has a tiny bit of black smear if I look for it but I don't notice it playing. My monitor is worse.

My DK2 has AWFUL smearing!
Only affects space(especially dark areas). Inside stations there is no smearing whatsoever!
I tried a CV1 last year when they first came out and it had the same problem so I returned it and kept my DK2 (wasn't going to pay 800$canadian for barely any improvement).
Glad to see that maybe they did something about it on the newer CV1's...still I'm not taking any chances anymore and will be waiting for CV2.

what does this black smear look like? I got my CV1 October 16 and I think there was no black smear even before 2.2.03

Well, the thing about a black smear - its main distinguishing feature - is it's black. :) Really dark areas of the display have this strange artefact. On my DK2 it's got feathery edges - and it kind of "floats" with a little lag as you move your head around.

You may have a point about the screens becuase to add to that experience of black smearing I had with the CV1 was that the black smearing was VERY obvious in the left eye but barely noticeable on the right!

And the thing about space - the colour of space, your basic space colour - is it's black. So how are you supposed to see 'em?

It used to show up (for me) mostly when arriving in a system. The light from the star would make stars almost invisible upon arrival. As soon as you leave the star and move toward deep space, the black spots where space dust is not present would show as pitch black, smear like, stain that would move with head movement.

The dithering not only eliminated the smear, the overall feel of the image quality is more crisp now (i run the game at 1.0 oversampling). Frontier did a very good job here.

.....

Have you heard any whooshing sounds over your head lately? ;)

There should be a warning notice on this thread, I never noticed any black smear until i read this thread and then I looked for it.. now it's bugging me!!!

Banding is way better for me — it's hardly noticeable anymore — but black smear is still there on my Rift CV1. For example, it looks like there's a layer of small black dots between my eyes and the lenses when I'm looking at something with a dark background.
