Black spots and shadow flickering in asteroid fields.

Hi,

I have visual problem that is really bothering me. When I am in asteroid fields some of the asteroid turn black or parts of them and then turn back to normal. It's really annoying flickering. I don't remember having this kind of problem when I was last playing elite. And why is that when I am landing on the surface shadows are ok but on the surface they look really noisy and grainy?

Odyssey shadows have never been very good (it seems that they switched from what I believe was percentage closer filtering to exponential variance shadow maps, probably to address some artifacts and simplify the implementation, which added a slew of new problems), but they broke them badly a while back (U14's, IIRC, shadow flickering and missing frustums), mostly fixed them, then broke them again around U18...which is more or less the state they've remained in.

What amazes me most is that x4 seems to have now better or equal lightning. In a game that is management game. I might be wrong cause I don't own x4 but will buy it from christmas sale.

The way how Egosoft manage their IP is pretty much the opposite of Frontier's MO in almost every way. And it shows in-game, i.e. it continuously improves in terms of QoL, graphics, gameplay. Can highly recommend it (1,200+ hours and counting).

Yeah, it sad because X4 is a shadow of what Elite is as far as exploration and flight and combat, but that company continually improves their product so that in a few years playing it a much improved experiance. FDev adds features and leaves all old bugs and bad design in place so it's overall quality goes downhill over time. If you take a break and come back you find for every new feature you have 2 to 4 new bugs in addition to EVERY other bug you remember from before.
