Newcomer / Intro Blew up on launch pad!

There I was in my cobra loaded with 20 tons of gold. Requested a launch " Ship released" throttle zero pressed vertical thrust!!! Crash , bang , wallop Insurance claim 20 tons of gold and several newly discovered Suns wiped out! I could afford it but I need a resp to recover my losses any explanations?

Were you docked at the back end of a big station? There's a center pole there that overhangs those back pads that you can crash into if you just lift straight up. That alone shouldn't blow you up unless you're flying without shields.

yeah could well be a larger ship above. I always lift off slowly so that the rare occasions I have contact it is gentle enough to cause no damage.

Yeah, you should always have a quick look up before you take off. Engage head-look, look up, AAARGH - big Anaconda!! down down down...

For newcomers, putting 4 pips to shields while docking/taking-off can save you if you make the odd mistake while learning.

Yeah... I found that one. Boosted from the pad at speed, hit the centre pole and then ricocheted around the station for a while hoping that no one noticed. B

I really think the pad-landing graphic should be disabled at launch and replaced with the regular radar to help with this. It serves no purpose at launch, and you can easily lift off into the path of a speeding ship you simply could never see.

Thanks for your various replies. As I said it literally blew up on the pad. The only thing I can think of is that it had'nt finished releasing the ship. If there was another ship it must have been 6 feet above me! Having a look up is good advice though.
