Serious question.

After it breaks a speed record, what does that do for the world?

I can't see any practical application.

There is no practical application of it, but that was never the point. The main purpose has been to inspire kids to take an interest in STEM subjects

Only practical application being to be faster than anyone else... and getting faster first.

I'm always interested in this stuff.

Go fast!

Don’t worry, you are in good company.

Here are a couple of quotes from this site.

"One day there will be a telephone in every major city in the USA" - Alexander Graham Bell, c.1880.
"I think there is a world market for as many as 5 computers." - Thomas Watson, head of IBM, 1943.

And a favourite of mine.

"The telephone may be appropriate for our American cousins, but not here, because we have an adequate supply of messenger boys." - group of British experts, c.1900.
