Blown away by the DK2 and a little disapointed

So I set up the DK2
Blown away by
looking around the ship
The 3D map
Flying through asteroids. I'm out in the black and haven't had the pleasure of docking yet.

The downsides, and I'm only mentioning this to see if there is anything I can do about it.
Reading the text is very difficult and at times impossible.
Selecting anything in the galaxy or system map is also impossible.

Also is it possible to have a standard image on your monitor whilst using VR?
Easy enough to take the glasses off if that's the case when selecting items in galaxy and system view.

When I got my DK2 I followed all these instructions for setting ED up: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=121355 and text is fine once it's all set up, and the game runs great.

However, tonight I tried out using a custom resolution in the Nvidia Control Panel (2560x1440) and it not only made a huge difference to text legibility but a massive improvement to how the game looks over all. Everything is so much sharper and the game looks 10x better, it's stunning.
I have had to put all my settings on low though as my gtx 970 struggled a bit at that res, but it still looks amazing and the text is crystal clear, it's a joy to the eyes!. I'll probably drop down the resolution a bit to 2351x1323 as listed in the thread I've linked to. I highly recommend following that thread to get everything looking right, it's well worth it.

Congrats on your DK2. What are your PC specs by the way?

Edit: BTW you could experience docking/stations in the rift by using the games tutorials. That's what I did cause I'm out exploring too.

I've only a 740.
I have a spare graphics card slot
What do you recommend me getting for it?
Also is it possible to run normal view on the monitor at the same time?

If you change your HUD to green it's easier to see the text (it's something about discerning greens better having been monkeys once)

Also imho a GTX 970 is best bang for your buck, gives enough power to down sample to 1080p from higher resolutions and no worries about framerate.
