Was I mistaken and you can't install these on Sidey's, or can you?
From what I remember it's a class 2 so that would be a yes.
At least it wasn't an independently targeting particle beam phalanx.

Rail gun is class 2 weapon so it can be installed on any ship.
Don't try shaving with it though. Gives you a nasty rash.
My old Sidewinder was taken out in one blast by an Eagle with three of the damn things installed.
Rotated paper-thin hull target into cross hairs at nearly point blank range.

Didn't like it one bit.
They're difficult to use but if you can master them then they are devastatingly effective.
Just make sure you do it in one or two shots as you won't get any more.

Got on of those on my Hauler I think.
They are very effective against NPC ships, but TBH, you need a bit more skill against people. If you miss, you're managing heat whilst your opponent is lining you up. Then they become very ineffective against a well flown ship with the charge time...

So turns out you can buy these for the Sidewinder, go to Outfitting and as long as you have 12,600 credits you can get one of these bad buys. It's crazy over powered but saying that also requires a lot of precision. I got one for my sidey and in the LP extraction zone near Freeport I just ripped through one bad guy after another. Took on average three hits with the rail gun per sidey to finish them off. I doubled my kills with this monster cannon. Problem is with only two mounts you can really only fit the rail and one other weak weapon, you could have two rails but heat would be problem and you'd need to be on target pretty much every time. Ideally three mounts is best, two fixed or gimballed lasers and one rail gun, even thinking about getting a Eagle after all, although I'm only 20,000 credits from a Cobra so think I'll wait, this Railgun has made grinding fun again
They are very rarely generated now. I usually go to Chango and re-launch until they appear.
The only thing Haulers have for defence is harsh language.
