Blue beam weapon? What is this?!

Where do you find these guns? I haven't been able to locate them...

I have noticed the Beagle 2 station tends to have them fairly often. If they don't, simply log out and then back in, and repeat until you see one.

If I remember right they cost 11,800 credits. And fortunately, there doesn't appear to be a gimballed version :)

They're fun, but as Adept mentioned, a game-breaker at the moment as they seem to be overpowered.

My railgun rampage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2Sr39upwzk :D

I wouldn't have said they were overpowered. Sure, they do high damage, but they require skill to aim, and have a high cost if you miss too many shots. I would put my money on a skilled pilot with gimbal lasers vs another player with railguns, as you can make it very difficult for them to land shots while being able to pepper them continuously.

They are particularly nasty if you get taken by surprise though, but anytime you see another player on the gravidar with weapons out, you should be expecting an attack anyway, and have 4 pips in your shields while flying erratically to offset the chance they land an easy hit on you.

EDIT: I take it that footage was recorded before the rubbish crosshair was added? :p

I don't consider them overpowered either. They're slow to fire, require a level of skill and are ranged (last time I checked) so their close-up damage tails off quite quickly. If you make yourself a sitting target, they'll chew through you quicker than Fleshlumpeater....

Given they take up a slot, their power requirements and their cost, lack of aim assist, etc. I think they're in the right place.

IIRC looking at the damage chart someone has handily crafted, are they not the same damage as a beam? or is there something I'm missing here?

Is there only Class 2 RailGuns, How many can be fitted onto a Cobra?

The Cobra can take 4 of them but the bottom two slots are almost totally worthless for them. They are mounted too far apart and unless you are at point blank range they actually miss either side of your target.

In the Cobra it is best to mount 2 of them on the top two mounts and a couple of gimballed weapons on the lower mounts. The problem then is that you are effectively wasting 2x class 4 bays with class 2 weapons. Personally I find it a trade off worth making. Even against PVP it is easy to get a good point blank shot that effectively cripples a sidewinder or an Eagle.

On the Eagle, mounting three makes you a one shot killing machine if you are a good dogfighter and shot. If you are only average or still learning the ropes the rail guns are almost worthless unless you get a lucky shot.

You also only get two shots before your ship is at 100% + temperature. At 100% temperature the ship will turn off lasers to reduce heat. This can leave you a sitting duck. For this reason fit a heatsink dispenser so you can dump heat in an emergency.

I would advise only fitting rail guns if you are a capable pilot and shot.

I learned hard in my days playing Wing Commander 2 that you never fly straight at an opponent who's gunning for you. The price of that first salvo surprise is terrible.
