blue screen randomly (hard reboot) :(

I'm noticing this irritation. every play session I have 4-8 hours. I will get one Blue screen crash to desktop, and I have to hard reboot because I can't get back into the game. but I can hear the game responding when I click my mouse. My drivers are all up to date. win 10. 16 g of ram.

what gives?

ok, thanks, guys. yes AMD R9 380. I think it happens when I am 30KM from a Plannet city... It always happens, well most times... I will put the settings back to default and see.
I notice my PC will heat up when sitting in a base ... again only sometimes..regular reboots seem to help. I'm not sure it's my PC as I play a lot of other games with no issue... game slike rust, 7days 2 day. others..PC is getting old too i guess.

With that time scale, I'd suspect a temperature issue. If the game audio is still running, possibly on the GPU (i.e. GPU crashed, but the rest of your rig is still running). ED is pretty much a stress test for your rig.
It may be overkill, and I'm not an expert, but you might wan tto try and run e.g. HWInfo in the background and keep an eye on your GPU temperature.
Or go full hog and see if you can crash it with a GPU benchmark like Firestrike (or whatever your GPU manufacturer proposes as stability test).

so crash reports point an audio driver. I but I feel like that's another blue screen a rarely see when watching youtube. I have updated the realtech driver and I see that crash once in a blue moon. Heat is most likely the issue. but with a heat crash, the computer "should" just shut-down... but it's dropping to desktop and not letting me. alt back in.. I have to end up Hard rebooting and once I reboot Tep is low 80s. This is during long play sessions 4-8 hours. But my play style has changed recently to logon and then out and in again looking for mission respawns... so I am not seeing this crash anymore because of regular recycling.

really feel like it was an in-game crash when spawning into city maps on planets about 30 KM away after glide...

Try installing an older AMD driver. I just updated from 19.x to 20.2.1 and my system now crashes while browsing and watching youtube. Just an idea. In my experience, AMD graphics driver sometimes suck so much that a small update isn't worth the trouble and I've been using AMD cards for a while. Hope it helps.

Nothing wrong with 20.2.1
I got an RX550 2G.
ROC asus Ryzen 5 1500X
Never used anything but ATI/AMD. 30 years

They are rocks, I can leave the game on parked on my pad all day long.

overheating is intermittent and tricky. Best cases, just look in the case.

ED's Cobra engine will push your GPU harder than most any other game. My GPU temps average about 5-7C higher with ED than other games. One program that gives me similar temps to ED is Unigine's "Valley". Turn off V-sync and anti-alias and let that run awhile and see if it crashes.
I found CoreTemp useful for keeping an eye on my CPU on the taskbar.

Dust is the enemy. I clean out my machine every 2 months.

The actual error code is often more revealing than the software that happened to fail because of it. Driver BSOD are uncommonly caused by the drivers themselves, and hardware instability can easily prompt them.

There is a known issue with the last several months of AMD drivers where they get black screen crashes at intermediate loads. The current workaround is disabling browser GPU acceleration.

This is... timely, I was just watching a internet vid and when I 'x' out of it I got the Blue screen of death for the first time in... well, ages!
Edit: I was watching on 'Listen on Repeat'
I have noticed a good number of Black screen 'lag' issues with older games/sims recently, I've been informed (could well be ill-informed) that newer cards cope differently with certain settings those older cards and DX 8 were used to with the old programs, not related I know (well, I think I know) but annoying just the same.

If you get the "Blue Screen Of Death" when doing something other than playing Elite Dangerous, then it could be a due to a corrupted Windows 10 operating system. Happened to me after years of PC use. Clean Windows re-install fixed everything.
