These are just my suggestions on a few things i'd like to see added, for whatever that's worth.
Commander Profiles: (Bio's)
Flying though space we often see the lights of passing players, and yet it doesn't feel much like a community exists. Add a Bio section (with privacy settings to avoid abuse) that we can view of the players we have interacted with in game, This could include a optional back story page with the players achievements in game, combat and trade skills, Faction alignment, ect... and updated as things happen.
Ship Customization:
Edit: I've installed Voice attack as suggested below, and I think this is a great add on, but feel that this is something that could generate income for the developers if they added voice packs of their own in the shop for it. Additionally news tickers That worked with Text To Speech features (supported by Voice attack) would greatly enhanced immersion by providing local news and possibly clues to objectives ect.. So much could be done with this feature alone.
Ship Modules:
Add a Ship AI that can provide varying things like accessing Galnet from space to inform me of local news or how many players die or were interdicted here ect.., or a combat version that can aid me with information on the ship I'm fighting, such a Targets direction and speed, Saved combat maneuvers for use with hotkey or voice command or to taunt me when I'm loosing ect..
Smuggling:
Add ships with secret cargo holds specifically designed to not be detected by the scans, this could be offset by not allowing certain features to be added to the ship such as weapons and limited jump range.
Add a Smugglers docking bay on the dark side of the station for black market or dirty deals to be handled, to me it makes no sense to waltz in the front door with illegal goods. To off set this you could add a faction in (or one for each system) that players must gain favor with to access.
Powerplay factions:
As it is now when a player join a Major faction they become labeled Hostile when entering another faction's territory. This to me is a problem. It creates a reason for player to remain neutral and not participate in Powerplay. How does any Faction just automatically know that I’ve join a certain faction, its a poor game mechanic.
A better way to handle this would be to include faction paints, and decals that would be mandatory, (or even auto applied with a notification to the player) to wear when performing faction specific quests, with exception to smuggling quests that would be dealt with from scans.
If the player isn't doing something “hostile” or Flying the flag of their faction in the territory they shouldn't become labeled just from the all seeing eye.

Ship Customization:
- Voice packs in the store to replace the default one, everything from sultry to sassy to Timid or Confident personalities.
- More Ship designs in the shop, If you struggling to ideas then have a contest for best ship design(s), I'm sure there's lots of great artists just waiting for a chance to have their design featured in game.
- Bobble heads of the faction leaders.
- Replace the holographic(’s) on the dashboard with the current ship paint of the ship displayed. I believe the current setup is a missed opportunity to encourage sales of the custom ship designs both by giving players a way to see their ship as they play, and view other players ship that offers enticing advertisement of ship designs.
