I was suffering from very blurry text on all the ship consoles (nav, chat, etc).
This was fixed when I went into window mode, and then back to fullscreen mode. Not sure what was happening, but it corrected it.
The extreme darkness and low fps are still issues, but at least I can play without inducing a major headache now!
