I just started a boat tour this past weekend. I built a habitat around my station but across the river from where my guests enter/exit. Then I've been building new habitats along the route. This seemed easier then trying to put in a boat path after everything else was built. The drawback to having the habitat in with the station is that guests are going down the exit path to see the habitat and making the exit for the ride congested.
So right now 80% of the boat ride has no scenery whatsoever which is why i pushed the boat speed up to its highest. I am not getting enough traffic yet to break even but I do have a consistent queue of 20 guests waiting for a boat and I'm charging $15 a ride. it took a bit of operating time before anyone showed up. I regularly check guests coming off the ride and they are enjoying it.
I have a staff bridge to cross the river with a staff building village behind the habitats I'm setting up along the river route. So far it seems to be working.
I had a thought about a 2nd station at the other side of the island where guests can exit the boat and access habitats on the island. If the boat is the only way back off the island (i.e. if i don't build a guest bridge) will they complain about being "stuck"? Maybe...but I'll put an ATM at the boat dock so they can pull out more money to pay for the ride home! They should have planned ahead.
