Bonus objectives

I don't know if this is a bug per say, but I doubt it's working as intended. Occasionally when running transport missions you'll be contact with a bonus objective - usually deliver the goods within a specified time for an extra reward. I had about six missions with bonus objectives this weekend. Three of them, however, requested the delivery to be made in 0 hours, 0 minutes.

I'm familiar with the idea of "needing something yesterday", but it's kind of a bummer to have a reward dangled in front of your face knowing that it is absolutely impossible to receive it.

These mission updates do give you about 30 seconds to complete the mission, which is still stupid as it can often take that long just to open the mission screen.
I've seen a comment by a dev that they were having trouble identifying where this bug is coming from, which was a dissapointing answer. You'd think that they would just add a couple of minutes to all of the update times.

Yesterday I had it coming up at almost _every_ single delivery - just as I exited SC, the message was popping up about extra payment for delivery within 1 or 0 minutes.
Strangely, I managed to get in time once (planet).
What is suprising is that it was also happening to me few days ago, but then I had something like 10 minutes to finish delivery early.
The only difference is, it was Sidewinder back then and Cobra mk3 now...

Or simply not allow bonus offers to be "updated" at all . . .

That would be a band aid fix, but still wouldn't explain what is causing the issue. From our perspective the effect is the same, but FD wants to know where the real issue in their code is. You never know what other problems that same issue may cause, so I understand their desire to fix it the right way.

Yeah, just clamp the minimum time for this to, say, 2 minutes and it should be possible to actually dock at a starport and load the mission board in time... :D

As a programmer I agree with this, that still doesn't preclude an easy workaround for the benefit of the players while the devs are searching for the actual cause. :)

Let's cry in our beers together [cry] : Last night I tried to drop off a mission but the mission board would not let me, the mission did not even appear on the board. I am in the right station, the mission has not expired yet (tick-tock) so I pose the question to Google and find that my full cargo hold may be the problem. Seems I may not have enough free cargo space to accept the payment of "materials" that come with the credits received for this job (?!) and the game will not allow me to deliver the cargo that would free up the space needed to accept their payment of "materials". Great work, FD! I quickly dumped some junk and as I re-open the mission board the game fails/expires the mission. While I am sitting in the station, on the landing pad, looking at the mission board. Wah.

As for the bonus offers, I ignore them, they're bugged and ED is keeping fairly quiet on the subject. Here's how (IMO) it should work:
Once offered, a bonus (I'll pay more for early delivery) payout (and deadline) cannot be modified downwards, but additional bonuses can be offered if and as the desire for early delivery increases (I'll give you even more if you can get it here even faster). Once offered, bonuses amounts and deadlines cannot be rescinded except in the case of mission/offer expiration or failure. If an offer is made, then another offer is made for even faster service and the pilot misses the second deadline but still makes the first, the pilot should still receive the first bonus offered i.e.:

A pilot, hauling cargo and with 2 hours left to deliver receives a bonus offer of 100,000 for delivery within 1 hour. As the pilot exits Supercruise at the destination 30 minutes later he or she receives another offer for 50,000 more if the goods can be delivered within 5 minutes (25 minutes before the first bonus offer deadline and 85 minutes before the original mission deadline). If the pilot successfully makes the delivery within the new (5 minute) deadline the pilot should receive both bonuses as the pilot has satisfied the conditions to earn both bonuses. If the pilot lands 6 minutes later he or she should forfeit the "five-minute" bonus but still receive the "one-hour" bonus. Obviously if the pilot misses the one-hour bonus deadline he or she forfeits all bonuses and if they miss the original mission deadline they fail the mission entirely.

This "Hurry up and earn a bunch of credits . . . . PSYCHE! HA-HA stuff has to stop.

It's a pretty common sort of issue I've seen in lots of games that use timers.
As humans, 0 means nothing, time's up. But computers consider anything less than 1 to be 0 as far as timers are concerned, so a 60-second timer would show as 0H 0M, as would anything less than 60 seconds.
Ideally, all timers should actually be Time_Remaining + 1, and Timer_Expires = 1, so if you want someone to have a 1 minute timer, you actually give them 2 minutes, but end the timer at 1 minute remaining, then we never see 0's that mean "Time's up" to us, but mean "There's 1 minute or less" to a computer.

Agree with identifying the root cause of the bug rather than a quick and dirty fix.

In the meantime, could we please switch it off: stacked missions with constant spam messages about an insignificant sum of bonus followed by another batch seconds later expressing disappointment in your prowess is becoming rather wearing.

The real irritation for me is the scenario where you arrive at the star. Bonus message says you have e.g. 10 mins. Or 40 mins either way, plenty. Off you toodle to the station. Exit SC. Immediate message now 0h 0m.

I am aware that under certain circumstances I could punch the 'Vette through the slot within 30 secs or so and possibly realise a tremendous boon of £60K on top of the 2.5m Cr mission I am delivering. This would entail an unacceptable risk versus reward for me - all I need is some NPC T9 to be exiting the mailslot at the same time I am travelling over 300 m/s and with the shields I have I will be nicely into the station with a dead T9 behind me......predictable results will follow. Just not worth it.
