The Dark Wheel

I've got a bit of time on my hands currently with 2 weeks forced holiday coming up. SO I've had time to re-read Dark Wheel as well as Imprint. Quite enjoyed TDW. I had forgotten that hyperspace travel was so regulated with lanes and many mentions of witch space. When playing Elite Plus I always made a point of moving well away from the station and planet before entering hyperspace.(Or did you have to wait for the S to go before you could jump, cant remember)

So for the members that haven't got so much time on their hands I'll wait for everyone to catch up.

PS Also had a look at the original Frontier fiction but will have to some heavy formatting before putting them on Kindle.

I recently read TDW so I'll just read along with what you guys have to say about it.
Happy reading times to all of you.

What I remember of the book is kind of a blur as I also read the oolite saga directly after that. I do remember that ut didn't take me a lot of time to read though. About 3 days of commuting to and fro to work.

I happened to read the entire body of fiction (Dark Wheel, Imprint, FE2 and FFE) over last Christmas during the Kickstarter craziness. I have to say that none of them really blew me away by their quality and the FE2 and FFE bits were actually not so much short stories as they were brief glimpses into the lives of some specific people.

All of the stories introduce concepts that are not considered canon. The most important of these that I can remember are the hyperspace jump points, the concept of how witchspace travel is described and artificial gravity introduced in the Dark Wheel. Artificial gravity also appeared in FE2/FFE fiction (in the form of sleep fields etc.).

I do like the holographic Ben Kenobi in chapter two..... nice setup for the action to follow...

Bit more interesting, still slightly clinical writing..

Hurray for Chapter 3.... ACTION!!

I think the format of the e book is off... and it causes some of it to be difficult...

OK, I have finished The Dark Wheel.

It was OK as stories go. I didn't like that it jumps forward with no explanation that it has, you are left to figure that out. The main characters seemed to progress far too easily, and it came close at times to Mary Sue characters. I felt the ending was rushed, the story could have been much longer, but it was edited down to fit, and the ending inserted to conform to a word count.

I did like that it clearly has been written as the game was being developed.

The biggest shame is that Rob Holdstock isn't here to reply to our comments.

I finished the book last night. I enjoyed it and would have liked it to be longer.

Yes, the characters are 1 dimensional and the plot did feel a bit rushed but it must be taken into account that this is a speculative piece of fiction and probably had a tight budget.

It was great for explaining the basics of the game and introducing a number of characters that pop up from time to time. I'm thinking of Rafe Zetter etc.

I also like the bloke with parasitic spider worms in his face. That would be a nasty way to go! :)

Looking forward to the next one now.
