Bookmark stuff

1. If you are friendly with a rescue ship, etc, it'd be great if the bookmark you make for it stays with the ship even after it's been moved. I know this may be a security issue, so being able to become friendly with the ship should take care of that. Or maybe there should be a higher level needed for that?

2. When hitting 'back' from viewing a system, the galaxy map goes back to the first jump along a route, if you have one plotted. Hitting back should be the same, whether you have a plotted course or not, and the galaxy map should be centered on the system you were last viewing. To get to where you are located, you still can hit the 'home' key and that takes care of that.

3. I thought I had a glitch, because I was trying to add a bookmark and it just spun the little icon. Then I deleted a bookmark, and voila, was able to add a bookmark. So...
a) how about having something that flashes or has big letters splayed across the screen, or some indication, that you've reached the maximum number of bookmarks. What should be there is a bar which changes colour as it rises, so you know if you're approaching the maximum.
b) I dont buy the whole "back in the 80's, for the first Elite, computers couldn't handle more than 10 bookmarks" sort of mantra. What a load of b.s. Bookmarks should be infinite. If you have enough bookmarks that it stops your computer from working, you should get a medal. send proof, etc...that'd be an achievement. Otherwise, I shouldn't have to pick how many bookmarks I have. (I suppose that becomes a sort of mini-game in itself tho, but not exactly the game I was expecting).

I think the max bookmark thing is more a DB impact issue than storage issue. What I'd like to see is locally stored bookmarks with proper support for folders, etc become a thing somehow, even if in a encrypted file that's tied to our account to prevent transfers if the devs care about that.

Oh, I guessed bookmarks were stored locally. Or are you saying even locally, this would be an issue?
It's good learning these things, because knowing limitations changes expectations.

It would depend how they're stored locally. If they['re stored in a flat file (like text) there'd be very little reason to limit them. if stored in a database format of some sort, however, then accessing them could have significant system performance impact depending on system specs. That said, I know they're server side because when I loaded Elite on a friend's rig to show it to him a while back the BMs were still present exactly as on my main system.

Because of that, there's probably a not insignificant load on the database that's at play whenever we access our BMs in game.
