Books or movies

Haha i never realized Malcolm was injured and drugged in both lol. I mean i knew because i read the books but it just dawned on me when u said that that he had the same experience both times lol.

Also at the end of JP it said Malcolm died actually. But i guess when MC decided to write a 2nd book he decided to write in that he hadnt actually died to put him in the LW. Malcolm mentions in the LW that it was reported he had died at one point.

In fact, I think he dies in the novel. Or at least that was the impression I first had when I finished JP. So then I was surprised when he showed up again for TLW

Yeah Malcolm sort of represents Crichton himself, so I'd say he wasn't expecting to do a sequel novel originally (not generally something he did).

Yep i remembered that and edited my op to put that in there lol. I read the LW first and when i read JP years later i was like wait... What? He died? Lol. But then i reread LW and was like oh ok he mentions he was indeed "rumored" to have died lol.

Ian does end up flatlining a few times in the aftermath, it's part of the reason he's got a lot of physical issues, and, if I remember right, why he didn't want the morphine again at first until they pretty much forced him in The Lost World...probably due to addiction issues there.

So Ian was a morphing addict in the 1st book and he was supposed to die at the end.now I get why everyone says the books are completely different.

Malcolm wasnt an addict in the 1st book. He injured his leg in the Rex escape same as the movie. But it's much worse in the book. His condition keeps worsening until he dies.

He's just saying he probably had addiction issues after the 1st book which is why he didn't want anything when he was injured again.

After the first book and his near death issue...probably something based on Crichton hearing about it and one of the Oxy addiction spikes (If I remember right, that's when it was all over the US news because of Rush Limbaugh having an issue and political infighting) and that being in the news seems like something that might catch his attention and use it in the story because it makes sense and adds to Malcom's development between Jurassic Park and The Lost World.

Yep, and Morphine is one of the drugs that can really mess people up that way, which is why it's so heavily restricted.

The big issue with it in The Lost World was me scratching my head about how the hell they got Morphine in their medical stuff since that's a pretty heavily restricted drug if you're not working in a hospital or hospice.

I always thought it might have been either a vet thing (giving how big treated animals are) or some expensive purchase they made after the workers' attacks.

And still maybe it was due to translation or edition issues but I had the feeling TLW was a completely different story, nothing to do with the universe I've read about in JP.

In the first book, it made sense to have it for the time period. They're in a resort which would have some medical stuff there for the long term and the major morphine issue, and they'd have resupplied it from Costa Rica for it which would have made it easier.

In TLW, it was part of their standard medical equipment that the expedition brought with them.

Yes, but the only medicam stuff ever mentioned was Harding, so Idk.

TLW was more a money thing, I think. Levine was millionaire, wasn't it?

I'd have assumed they upped their medical stuff on Nublar following the worker attack.

There's a major difference between the basic medical supplies and something that requires a doctor and licensed facilities for distribution. Levine being a millionaire doesn't matter with that part of it, and he was already in trouble with the law considering his probation mess that was the reason for Kelly and Arby's involvement in the story.
