[Bored] The More I Think About The Title, The More It Perplexes Me...

"Elite: Dangerous".

It's seemingly named after two different combat ranks.

Weird!

I totally get it's called Elite, because it's an Elite game.

IMHO, I don't think they wanted to call it "Elite IV" because it's not really a sequel.
Nor is it a reboot.

So it's just... "Elite: Sort of"..lol

But why did they chose "Dangerous"?

Does anyone know?

Maybe they just thought it sounded cool.

But I agree, if it was because Elite is supposed to be a dangerous game, it would make more sense. Also, why isn't it Elite: Deadly, when that's the closest and higher rank to Elite than Dangerous?

Sounded more marketable than Elite: Deadly, less repetitive than Elite: Elite, and a better lure than Elite IV for folks like me who never heard of the series before Dangerous.

Cause Elite: Mostly Harmless sounds too Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and Elite: Elite would just sound stupid.
Elite: Beyond the Frontier would work...

There is an explanation, and it's in the lore, but I'm not sure where to find it right now. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along soon to link or quote it though.

It's because there was a shortage of pilots in the Pilots Federation which was in the past restricted to Elite pilots. To boost membership the 'Elite' restriction was relaxed to include 'Dangerous' pilots as well.

It was explained like this during the kickstarter.

It's named Elite after the Elite trade rank, not the Elite combat rank, obvs.......

Don't know why they didn't name it after the Elite exploration rank. Explorers getting shafted again.... le sigh.

As someone with no prior knowledge of any Elite or Frontier games, when I first heard of Elite Dangerous I though the name was odd, if not stupid. It definitely didn't draw me more towards a purchase.

I love the game though, and don't really care much what it is called.

Basically because to be admitted to the ranks of the 'Elite Pilots Federation' (as opposed to simply 'The Pilots Federation' which all CMDRs are automatically admitted to) they lowered the admission rank to Dangerous... Because, as above, there simply weren't enough CMDRs who had attained the rank of Elite.

The titles of the other 3 games aren't any less stupid. Star Citizen, what sort of name is that? A "citizen" is a member of a land-based nation. Eve Online, makes it sound like a game for girls. No Man's Sky, makes no sense at all.
