[Bored] The More I Think About The Title, The More It Perplexes Me...

After Elite II: Frontier, and Elite III: First Encounters, when I heard of Elite: Dangerous, it sounded odd to me and I didn't get the "Dangerous" name could refer to the rankings. I thought it referred more to a dangerous type of game where yes, it even sounded dumb when I first heard it. Now the name works fine enough as the game has proved its reputation similar to how "Star Wars" had evolved far past the oddness of it's name. That said, I kind of wished ED could have been named something like a serial "Elite 4 : Galaxy" but I guess it was basically a reboot of the franchise and the Frontier image in general.

IMHO, I don't think they wanted to call it "Elite IV" because it's not really a sequel.
Nor is it a reboot.

Well, a lot of aspects of the game particularly the lore, point to it being a sequel to FFE which took place in 3250 and introduced the Alliance in game.
Much of the lore and locations in Elite2 and Elite3 continue in ED as well as design evolution of some of the older ships and their manufacturers.

"Elite: Dangerous".

It's seemingly named after two different combat ranks.

Weird!

I totally get it's called Elite, because it's an Elite game.

IMHO, I don't think they wanted to call it "Elite IV" because it's not really a sequel.
Nor is it a reboot.

So it's just... "Elite: Sort of"..lol

But why did they chose "Dangerous"?

Does anyone know?

Best thread of the day I am learning so much!

It's because there was a shortage of pilots in the Pilots Federation which was in the past restricted to Elite pilots. To boost membership the 'Elite' restriction was relaxed to include 'Dangerous' pilots as well.

It was explained like this during the kickstarter.
It does amuse me that during the initial development their plans changed sufficiently that they've never got around to implementing any of this in the game ... and as no-one's particularly calling for "Elite missions which people with a Dangerous combat rank can take" [1] they probably never will, either.

[1] Lori Jameson doesn't really count, since you have to be Elite at *something* anyway.

The titles of the other 3 games aren't any less stupid. Star Citizen, what sort of name is that? A "citizen" is a member of a land-based nation. Eve Online, makes it sound like a game for girls. No Man's Sky, makes no sense at all.

Star Citizen: A citizen can be anything the designers want it to be, but it's definitely not limited to a land-based nation.
Citizens in SC are chosen members of society, selected from Civilians. This is a status that has to be earned through active commitment to furthering the interests of the UEE. This can be achieved through distinguished military service, community service, or application.

In addition, the name could also mean "A citizen of the stars", which could be a light reference to someone who lives amongst the stars/in space.

Eve Online: According to popular lore, thousands of years ago, our ancestors came to New Eden through a massive wormhole. Colonies were established, and a massive jump gate was built around the wormhole to stabilize it. After a number of colonies were established, however, some form of calamity struck the gate, collapsing the wormhole and cutting off New Eden from contact with our home systems. This gate was called Eve.

NMS: No man's land is land that is unoccupied or is under dispute between parties who leave it unoccupied due to fear or uncertainty. No Man's Sky refers the same, only for space.

Yeah, it seems that not everybody got that mission/version. It is unfortunate since it was quite an exciting and arduous mission. An end game kind of thing.

I never got to go to another galaxy but others did. I guess we all had different experiences.

<grumble> I got bored, bought a Galactic Jump drive, jumped to Galaxy 2 and nearly straight away was informed I had a mission in galaxy 1. So then I spent a while saving CR & jumping the next 7 galaxies (those galactic hyperdrives were expensive I think). ofc by the time I got back to Galaxy 1 I had no idea where the mission was, so never got it .... a shame as there weren't many missions in the BBC version - wonder if I could contact support to get another chance :)

It's each commanders decission if he want's to live dangerous...

Game of course also could be called "Elite: what thou wilt"

Oops! Sorry for the late arrival, folks. Got caught in traffic. Still, I'm here now and I've brought it with me. Here you go...

Why "Elite: Dangerous"?

Becoming Elite - Ratings
  • Getting the Elite rating (in any of the four rankings) automatically gets you into the exclusive “Elite Federation of Pilots” – and being a member of the Elite federation confers many privileges. It is also possible for pilots without the “Elite” rating to gain admission to the EFP, but access to the organisation is extremely difficult: one must show extraordinary promise as a pilot to be admitted.[...]
  • Once admitted the pilot will be awarded a badge including the “Elite” logo, but with their current rank below. It is expected the majority of these will be “Elite: Dangerous” and “Elite: Deadly”. Those with an “Elite” rating get the original, unadorned badge.

Is the "Dangerous" in the title of the game a warning about the state of the galaxy or just a reference to the combat rank?

(Yeah, I think it's a silly name too. But there it is, straight from the mouths of some top horses. Top. Horses.)

Basically because to be admitted to the ranks of the 'Elite Pilots Federation' (as opposed to simply 'The Pilots Federation' which all CMDRs are automatically admitted to) they lowered the admission rank to Dangerous... Because, as above, there simply weren't enough CMDRs who had attained the rank of Elite.

Time to change the rules then... and the name as well perhaps, after all, there will be no shortage of elite pilots now, after all Elite is no longer the most experienced pilots of them all, and we can get to this revered level in a matter of days.

(and i am told this is by design) ;)
