Bought a PS4 Pro just for ED

Greetings,

Now I have a PS4 Pro. Why? Because Elite Dangerous is coming to the PS4 in the 2nd quarter of 2017 (April 1st - June 30th) so I figure that I'll need to be proficient with it's operation and controllers! So I have a few months to come up to speed. Given Sony's history the PS5 won't show up before 2020 so we're good with the purchase.

In preparation for ED I have been playing No Man'S Sky on the PC (easily hacked with lots of mods) and the PS4 Pro (no hacking allowed). With the PC version I can see what can be accomplished. With the PS4 I am rewarded with many subtle moments that hacking the game will never show. More importantly I get to see the controller issues between the platforms. The PC is much more accurate compared to the PS4 where one really has to get proficient with the analog sticks with the one on the left for moving and the one on the right for looking around while moving. Even from earlier consoles they are still pretty much all or nothing that cannot be adjusted, well in No Man's Sky anyway.

Comments:

1. The Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS 4 (the only HOTAS licensed by Sony) should be incorporated for ED PS4. Many PC players use this and it will easily port to the PS4. But that is from a PC player not seeing how they will use the Dualshock 4 controller to provide the same detailed controls needed in the game. Maybe Frontier is working with Sony on an agreement with the Saitek HOTAS options. Frontier loves the X-52 maybe because it is in the style of a few ships in the game. They even sold it for awhile at a discount. Note that the PS4 also supports a keyboard and mouse. Lot's of options. Just a wild guess with no facts.

2. Game update downloads on a PS4 are incredibly slow. You thought they were bad on a PC? 66 minutes to update 1.4Gb on Grand Theft Auto 5. Even with the current high speed internet connections it is their narrow 5 limit packet where the server has to wait for the PS to transmit send more. Their reasoning was not overwhelm the PS with more data then it could handle. Sony could do a lot better.

3. The PS4 Camera adds lots of possibilities including seeing you physically move in the game, speaking commands for a faster response as well as hearing noises in your real world and responding to them. Turn your head and the game can respond to look left etc. No VR required. Probably won't work out too well for me as I have dogs looking to jump into my lap at the most crucial moments in a game!

4. The Playstation VR combined with the camera supposedly adds plug-n-play virtual 3-D. I've been waiting for a chain store like Best Buy to setup a demo PS4 VR but none yet. Maybe there aren't enough game titles yet. I did notice that Best Buy had a coming soon Oculus display.

5. Playstation excels at Internet player-to-player online texting, voice, private messaging, sharing, uploading captures to FaceBook, You Tube etc. With tons of accessories there are a lot of sound options. An interesting one is the PS4 Chatboost (from Collective Minds) which is a QWERTY keyboard that snaps onto the DualShock 4 controller. Using a headset connected to it all sounds can come through or the game sounds go to your TV/Surround system and the player live voices go to the headset.

6. Once can remote play the game to a PC using wired or Bluetooth to connect the controller. I think that one needs a Playstation Now account to make the game connection via the Internet.

7. The PS4 Pro supports 4k resolution (for example UHD = 3840x2160). So if one wants to spend $1700 - $10,000 for one of those curved Samsung TVs the PS4 Pro will support it. Note watching Star Trek TNG episodes on the PS4 from Netflix was instantaneous and a lot sharper than doing the same with my Samsung TVs or their Blu-Ray players taking forever to load. The technology moves on.

This is of course my early observations being new to the PS4. But from the looks of the Playstation abilities ED is the perfect game to show off what a PS4 Pro can do. No hassles trying to get the game to work on so many PC setups thus a lot less updates for given problems with their architecture. Hopefully Frontier has a whole team of devs working to take advantage of all the PS has to offer. Then maybe Best Buy will have the game that they want to promote to setup demos to sell thousands of Playstation VRs! Could work out well for everyone.

But it is just a game. Still I keep buying more hardware. I need an Elite intervention group!

Regards

I bought a PS4 Pro recently too. Mainly to upgrade from the old Xbox 360. A week later Frontier announces ED for PS4, which was a happy coincidence! I might just go VR for it though, and stick with the Playstation controller. The old Saitek X-55 does a wonderful job on the PC, even as the buttons begin to wear down...

:D S

Congratulations with your purchase.

I indeed think you are set for the next couple of years, and probably the PS5 will only be a optional upgrade, not needed for Elite Dangerous.. At least not until season 5 or 6. :D

If you want better control of the thumbsticks on PS4 then the best thing to do is fit PS4 Kontrol Freeks, as many of us do.

Mine lengthen each stick by around 11mm. It doesn't sound like a lot, but makes a huge difference in fine control owing to the formula for the circumference of a circle. ;)

The Classic or Ultra are the best stick extenders in the KF range for multi-purpose use.

It's weird you find game updates slow. They seem nice and fast on my original PS4 compared to my PC.

Isn't the PS4Pro the "PS5"?

No.

PS4 and PS4Pro are the same architecture. (currently) all ps4 games work on both and Sony (so far) have committed this is the case going forward. All ps4 accessories work with both.

The PS5 will (probably) have it's own suite of games/accessories/etc.

Thanks for the tip! I'll certainly check them out!

I bought five games on DVDs so that's my initial reaction with a 40Mbps connection. Not enough experience with it yet. Now I'm downloading Star Trek Online from PSN at 16.5Gb and wants 90 minutes to do it.
