Newcomer / Intro Bought a Refinery module -- I need something more to power it? WHAT?

I found a Refinery module, took that and my Mining Laser off to some asteroids, tried to cargo-scoop them -- NOTHING! "Refinery offline" or something like that. OK, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO GET THE REFINERY MODULE TO WORK? Does this stuff all have to be so esoteric and difficult to find out? How about if the game TELLS me that I need to buy something more to POWER the Refinery?!

Why do I so often feel frustrated playing E:D?

x,

You need to make sure you have enough power to run all your modules. A screenshot of your outfitting page would be helpful. From what you've described, you need a bigger power plant.

When in outfitting, you can see what power you have vs what power you need on right hand side.

See you out there!

In your modules tab on the righthand dropdown screen, you are able to set the priorities for powering your modules. You have 5 levels of priority 1-5, your ship will power all 1s, then all 2s and so on. If it doesn't have enough power for a particular level, then none of this level get powered. So if you hven't set priorities, everything may power off when you deploy weapons. It's embarrising, but we al do it on occasion. Last time I did it, my Anaconda was seriously damaged by an NPC Cobra as I sat there without thrusters, shields, or weapons until I could switch enough modules off to function.
After setting priorities, you may still not have enough power. You can turn off some modules, e.g. weapons while you are mining. Just don't forget to turn them on again later.
.
edit. What type of ship are you using? and what is your budget?

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

I assume from that, that you are now OK.

For future reference (excuse me if it is blindingly obvious)

You can't use your FSD, fuel scoop or docking computer when your hardpoints are deployed so make them your lowest priority. When mining you need your cargo scoop but otherwise I have cargo scoop, fuel scoop and docking computer set to priority 5. FSD is set to 4 then lowest hit weapon 3, next lowest 2 and everything else set to 1.

It does mean, if your FSD goes offline due to power limitations, that it now takes some time for the FSD to come back online when hardpoints are retracted, but as long as you remember that, it is OK.
