Bought an Oculus Rift yesterday. Returning it today.

Yeah. It was cool, but I couldn't handle the God ray effect. Made text unreadable in game. Hoping they fix this in gen 2, because I was really looking forward to finally experiencing Elite in VR.

Plus, on a black screen, it looked like there was a dark green screen door on the right eye lense. Wasn't noticeable with a lot of color on screen, but in the black of space, it was unbearable.

There's a setting in game for HMD quality that would address readability. The "screen door" being only on one side makes me wonder if you adjusted the IPD correctly or not.

No idea what any of that means. There's a layer of visible dark green pixels on the right side when the screen is black. It's a well defined plane.

Readability is from the God rays. Nothing in game will change that. It's the flare on the lenses.

Well that's definitely a fault so you did the right thing returning it.

True it can't be eradicated completely but it can be lessened by choosing a cyan or green HUD scheme and turning down the HUD brightness and gamma as low as possible.

Try turning the gamma and the UI brightness down as much as possible. This should help with the readability. The god rays hopefully won't be a major issue. I don't notice them that much, but maybe thats because I wear glasses and see stuff like that all the time in my normal life.

The green line of pixels though sounds like an issue.

Before you give up on the HMD!

If the layer of visible dark green pixels is on one side only, that suggests a defective display?

God rays though is a result of the lenses. TBH I only ever notice it on the load screen. I am not sure I even notice any GR with the in game text. However I have a custom blue HUD. You might dim down the HUD brightness a touch or two. Lowering just a little really helps.

A dumb question from the uninitiated.

What are God rays?

Lense flare, basically. It occurs on a high contrast screen. The text reflects onto the lenses and creates a blur effect.

I've been in contact with oculus support, and I have to say they're fantastic. Best buy doesn't have another in stock, so I may try to work with support to see if there's a solution. They offered some things for me to try.

It's a well defined plane on the right side that is visible on a dark screen. It's almost as if someone put a piece of scotch tape about 3/4 of the way down the screen with little green speckles on it. If the screen isn't black, just dark, it looks washed out. I noticed it bad in Face Your Fears. May just be a driver issue.

Now I know this sounds like what you shouldn't do, but try turning the gamma UP!. I read this on another thread. Try it. Works brilliant for me.

Either a bad batch or you need to learn to use it properly.

It took me several days to learn how to perch it on my head properly tbh.

I use the Oculus debug tool (not sure if that's needed with recent updates) and I use the EDprofiler with light blue hud and gamma turned down. Helps make the text easier to read and reduce the flare effect. I've also read that there are aftermarket face pads that help reduce the God rays. It's a thinner pad which is supposed to bring it closer to your face and reduce the glare. I don't have one though so I don't know if it really works.

That sounds something like a broken SPUD file. It is a sort of filter that is unique to each Rift. You will have to look up how to delete your existing one (they get downloaded from Oculus again when you restart your PC) Just Google "Rift spud file" for more info.

Changing the colour of the Ship GUI will help with the god rays.

With text readability, there is a sweet spot position. If your not in that sweet spot, the text will be harder to read. Try adjusting the position of the Rift. For me, the sweet spot forces me to have the Rift higher up on my face than seems 'natural'.

Great thread, really contributing to the discussion here. New Rift owner, doesn't bother browsing the wealth of knowledge on this forum to determine the best settings to minimize GR, or at least learn what HMD quality and IPD settings are. Potentially has a defective Rift, but nah that must mean they're all terrible.

Elite is not a plug-n-play experience for VR right now. It's a shame that FDEV won't modernize it with an easy HUD color changer and other VR improvements. But for now you should plan to spend 20-30 minutes of your first time in Elite VR learning the settings and applying them.

At what point did I ever say they're all defective? That's some major misrepresentation going on.

I said I've been in contact with Oculus support, praised them, worked on some solutions, but it seems the best thing to do is swap it out to see if another works better for me. I then posted a thread that shows someone having the same problem as me, and swapping it out fixed their issue.

This problem isn't unique to Elite. It's present in everything on the headset.

I just bought it yesterday, and it's only a 15 day return window.

The one thing I don't know if I can get around is the God ray problem. I'll work on that with the new one if the other problem isn't present. I expect a brand new product to work out of the box. I'm willing to jump through some hoops to get around the God rays. I'm not willing to do anything to what looks like a defective screen.

That's not really fair.

To be able to parse the wealth of information on offer, context is needed to base understanding around. The problem is, is that there is too much info here. All well meaninged but meaningless unless you are in the know!

Heh! Dang right there though! I think more than 30 minutes is required tbh! :)

I too had tried a rift it too had weird color anomolies one one side only when in dark scenes. Completeley dissapointed compared to my DK2 so ended up keeping my DK2 since I actually found it better. ...and still use it today. ...until REAL next gen hmd's come out (like the pimax)
