Bought an Oculus Rift yesterday. Returning it today.

As somebody who has had several versions of the rift ever since the kickstarter I would suggest that settings or hardware are at fault because once you really start rifting you don't send it back! :p

Yeah. It was cool, but I couldn't handle the God ray effect. Made text unreadable in game. Hoping they fix this in gen 2, because I was really looking forward to finally experiencing Elite in VR.

Plus, on a black screen, it looked like there was a dark green screen door on the right eye lense. Wasn't noticeable with a lot of color on screen, but in the black of space, it was unbearable.

Sorry to hear this.

I do have a rift and use only Rift VR for playing ED.
I do not recognize any of your complaints; Imo it has to do with fine tuning the settings
or/and the specs of your rig.
My rig is a GTX1080, i7 6400K and 512 SSD samsung.

I can read all the tex and the black is proper black.

I just wanted to jump in here and say I'm happy with my Rift. I purchased it about 3 weeks ago and knew going in, after reading many threads, that there was a bit of a curve with getting it as good as it could be. I intended it for ED only. I didn't give up on ED after 2 hours (currently at about 2000), why should my ED VR experience be any different?

I've run into a few issues, one of which FDev Support helped with. I wish it was more plug and play, but hey, I can live with it. I hope, too, FDev makes game more VR compatible, but currently I'm very satisfied with my experience.

Well, I swapped it out for a new one. The wall mounts for the sensors will be here tomorrow, so I'll hook it up then. Cats can't leave them alone otherwise.

I appreciate the help and suggestions. I'll play around with God ray fixes.

Have to agree with & expand on a couple of points-

HMD placement:
Yeah, it will likely take a few sessions of experimentation to get the HMD placement/orientation. Like another poster, mine sits kind of high on my face, so the earphones don't quite sit where they should. (Most likely I just have an abnormally large dome. :) ) So play with both the elevation of the HMD on your face, plus the angle of it.

HUD brightness:
Most users report that turning down HUD brightness improves text clarity, and using a custom green or blue HUD color can help. HUD brightness is set in the in-game graphics options; the HUD color can be changed via at least one tool, ED Profiler (thread).

Screen door effect: Much like looking through an actual screen door here in the early 21st century, if you focus on something distant, the grid basically disappears. Bring your focus near, and it's impossible to not see it. Once you get used to "looking far" the screen door tends to go away.

Overall image quality: It will not look as sharp as a decent monitor or TV display. There are myriad threads on getting the best results from your HMD, and much depends on your hardware and your personal preferences. Personally, I sacrifice a little quality for zero stuttering or lag, and decent framerates. Post up your system specs and the usual suspects can probably suggest some settings to get you started.

"Looking Good": It might help to get used to turning your head to look at things that are not central in your field of view. The center of each Rift lens is the sharpest, so just swiveling your eyes to look up/down/sideways will have you looking at the less-focused areas of the lens.

Just to set expectations....my first few sessions with the Rift were short and kind of frustrating. Allow yourself some time to get it dialed in. I understand it's not for everyone, but there is nothing like standing up and looking around your cockpit (or bridge, for the larger boats), or ducking when a system security ship decides to buzz you while scanning.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Im on the vive, in steamvr there is a "night mode" setting which darkens the screen a bit and lessens god ray, the eyes adjust after a minute or so and i generally play in night mode because in addition to decreasing god rays i find it makes space more black than gray.

Might be something similar you could try on the rift, no idea tho.

I hope you find a good way of setting it up because Elite in VR is marvelous.

The first time i got my DK2 set up and loaded up the game i was still sitting in a Sidewinder, looking around i got a bad case of "The VR Giggles" laughing to myself, "im really in my ship" :)

New rift user here too, also massively underwhelmed.

I think I've probably been spoiled by playing on a big screen at 4k, but I genuinely don't find the vr experience as immersive as 2d. To me the vr all just looks too flat, sure the cockpit elements look and feel 3d, but anything beyond the canopy looks like a painted on 2d backdrop, even the stations.

I don't know if it's a settings thing, right now I'm running the same settings as I run in 2d (everything up to the max) with 1*supersampling and 1.5*hmd quality. I think I have the ipd setup correctly, other rift titles like lone echo are just fine.

While I'm not going to return my rift like the OP, i probably won't use it for elite, it just waters down the experience too much for my taste. VR isn't for everyone :)

Well, the only reason I actually returned it is because the right screen was defective.

Lense flare, basically. It occurs on a high contrast screen. The text reflects onto the lenses and creates a blur effect.

I've been in contact with oculus support, and I have to say they're fantastic. Best buy doesn't have another in stock, so I may try to work with support to see if there's a solution. They offered some things for me to try.

It's a well defined plane on the right side that is visible on a dark screen. It's almost as if someone put a piece of scotch tape about 3/4 of the way down the screen with little green speckles on it. If the screen isn't black, just dark, it looks washed out. I noticed it bad in Face Your Fears. May just be a driver issue.

Thanks. I've seen the term thrown around, and was simply curious. :)

At what point did I ever say they're all defective? That's some major misrepresentation going on.

I said I've been in contact with Oculus support, praised them, worked on some solutions, but it seems the best thing to do is swap it out to see if another works better for me. I then posted a thread that shows someone having the same problem as me, and swapping it out fixed their issue.

This problem isn't unique to Elite. It's present in everything on the headset.

I just bought it yesterday, and it's only a 15 day return window.

The one thing I don't know if I can get around is the God ray problem. I'll work on that with the new one if the other problem isn't present. I expect a brand new product to work out of the box. I'm willing to jump through some hoops to get around the God rays. I'm not willing to do anything to what looks like a defective screen.

VR is enthusiast tech really (annoyingly). I fricking love it and many here do but some people cannot forgive the short coming's (like SDE and god rays). I imaginer my way out of most of the drawbacks.... poor FOV and low res (I'm in a space suit wearing a helmet that stops my eyes melting when I'm right in front of a star). Easy fix for me [smile]

Great thread, really contributing to the discussion here. New Rift owner, doesn't bother browsing the wealth of knowledge on this forum to determine the best settings to minimize GR, or at least learn what HMD quality and IPD settings are. Potentially has a defective Rift, but nah that must mean they're all terrible.

Elite is not a plug-n-play experience for VR right now. It's a shame that FDEV won't modernize it with an easy HUD color changer and other VR improvements. But for now you should plan to spend 20-30 minutes of your first time in Elite VR learning the settings and applying them.

Nope. The OP has described the problem and it doesn't appear to be noob related. The Reddit post goes into more detail. So IMO check out the Oculus forum to see how many other users are having the same issue and whether Oculus has come up with a fix. If not, seek a replacement through Oculus support (or the retailer who sold the HMD to you).

To be clear, I have had my Rift for almost a year with no problems. The text is clear and no green dots. Bit of lens flare, but manageable with the game settings. So I wouldn't abandon VR, but would chase up Oculus about getting another HMD.

I am on my second unit now and most issues with pixels (I had red pixels showing, lines too) were due to the proprietary cable. Unfortunately Oculus support wont honor warranty on cables and you are forced to buy a new one from them at $49. Good thing you can just swap for a new one, their support is a waste of time. Another cause could be usb or hdmi connector, I had issues with some usb hubs and displayports I only found 1that worked on a laptop. Its very finicky. As for the resolution, good rays etc, I feel its good enough and doesnt disturb me at all with hmd quality 1.3~1.4x in elite. Good luck.

Recent CV1 user, PC Hardware specs far exceed minimum requirements, HMD 1.5 any higher the jitters start, green HUD display, brightness minimum, FOV minimum, God rays are still evident but bearable. What I find disappointing is the lack of sharpness and detail. The immersion of VR is great and that's what keeps me using it. I revert to 2D for SRV work as I get nauseous when using the SRV in VR.

VR has a long way to go before it matches 2D's great visual detail, stability and sharpness

Got one, and it's much better. I do notice that, in face your fears, the screen is completely washed out white. Blacks look horrible. Elite looks pretty good, though.

VR won't become mainstream, until we can buy the graphics cards to run it at a reasonable price.

I still don't know why SLI/Crossfire isn't a thing for VR. One graphics card rendering for each eye. Seems made for it. Maybe somebody could enlighten me.

I'm hoping that the graphics card companies have cashed in on the Bitcoin Bubble madness and have plenty of dosh for research and development <grin>.

I always knew that the CV1 wouldn't be my last VR helmet. But I am a bit disappointed with the specs of the new VIVE PRO. They could have done more to tackle the aberrations caused by fresnel lenses.

If there are still a few of you out there who are still on the fence about VR, then you are obviously not as enthusiastic about the technology as us "shut up and take our money" types. The best advice I can give to you is to try it out before you buy it.

Yeah, I got my Rift back in August.
Tried several HMDs and fiddled with different settings/positions for months, but now I just don't really use it.
It's weird.
Because the general consensus is that VR provides the most 'immersive' Elite experience, I feel I need to use it (rather than not use it) when I hop in the cockpit. But because I've been a little underwhelmed with the Rift I just don't bother. So I've hardly played Elite for months now.
I'll probably return/sell it if I can.

It is not plug and play and needs some tinkering to get the best out of it especially for ED. I was about to return it after the first couple of hours until I found my sweetspot. Godrays are there but bearable.
I only play on 2D when exploring and just jump and honk. In the bubble it is almost CV1 all the time.
For me the blacks are black, SDE is minimal. I guess I got a flawless unit.
But I understand that it is not to everyones liking. YMMV

Where it really shines is Lone Echo...

Still there is lots of room for improvement. Thats why I backed the Pimax 8k...

No idea what any of that means. There's a layer of visible dark green pixels on the right side when the screen is black. It's a well defined plane.

Readability is from the God rays. Nothing in game will change that. It's the flare on the lenses.
I had the same problem with my first rift...I contacted oculus and since i couldnt get a clear picture of the problem with my phone camera oculus basically told me to go pound sand. I broke down and bought another rift and the problem was not there. it was the rift itself and their chinese screens...
