Bought and watched 2001 Space Odyssey today

Reminded me a lot of Elite: Dangerous. I wonder what Stanley Kubrick would have thought about the game in relation to 2001? Near the beginning there is a scene of a ship docking with an orbital station. I could completely relate with my own ship flying now in Elite: Dangerous, and I felt like saying to the screen, "Hey, I can do that!"

While watching the movie, I thought often about flying my ship around the galaxy, and what adventures might transpire in Elite: Dangerous. The possibilities for the game are really amazing, and I have seen many positive steps forward lately. Thanks Frontier. Looking forward to the future.

Now, if only I could reset my stats.

If you haven't already you should watch the show Babylon 5. It's a lot like Elite as well. Especially the titular space station that it's set on:

And yes, the docking bay is right where you think it is. :D

How ironic that Elite: Dangerous now has better graphics than Babylon 5 did 20 years ago... ;)

Even more if you use Voice Attack and start to talk with your ship. "Hal, please deploy the landing gear!"

But you do know, that the elite actually did quote 2001, don't you? The music played when using the docking computer while entering a rotating space station is a direct quotation from the film. I laughed so heartly, when I played the game (long, oh so long ago) and heared it the first time. :D

Yep Babylon 5 was an good series with awsome cg for the day
I remember the alien ships that looked like huge spiders, Shadows I think they were called. It would be nice to see them ED perhaps in the future, I always thought they looked cool.

If you can, have a read of the novel version of 2001. It explains a lot of what is going on in the later part of the film. Very clear and direct writing from Mr Clarke, and a lot of fascinating philosophy.

Cheers, Phos.

!USELESS FACTS ALERT!

The story of 2001 was based on Clarke's writing for a BBC competition, the story was originally called "Sentinel".

The book was actually written by both Clarke and Kubrick during the filming of the movie and was released shortly after the film hit the screen.

I am a huge Clarke fan, he is one of the best Sci-fi authors of our time. He predicted satellites circling the earth long before the first sputnik launch by the Russians. He was way ahead of his time. ;)
