Bounty and death

I think it is a little severe to get a 500 credit fine and the guy starts shooting you while all you did is not stop so he could scan you. On top of that (since he is shooting at you) you have to kill everyone in order to leave. If you get killed before finishing off all the 8+ guards and the untold number of civilians in the settlement, you now have a bounty (larger) or even a kill order on you when all you originally did was not stop walking for a scan. Too strong.

The only time I have been shot at for being scanned is when I already had a bounty on me, otherwise they just scan and walk away.

It's definitely a bit excessive, even from a wanted criminal perspective. If your scan shows up a reason for you not to be welcome, there should be something like a 15 second window where either:

  • you do nothing and they arrest you, either kicking you back to your ship, or essentially playing out like you handed yourself in, paying the bounty by no rebuy.
  • you run, and they attack you; or
  • you draw a weapon and they attack you.

It's a bit jarring to wilfully submit to a scan, and then the guard just opens up.

no he did not scan me - he just started shooting and there was a pop up that say I just got fined 500 credits.

Well there are bases where they shoot on sight, I have been to a few of those also, it's part of my basic settlement assessment routine, "will they start shooting at you if they see you?" Stopping to be scanned without first establishing whether or not these guards have shoot on sight orders for intruders seems a bit..sketchy! They don't all wait to scan you, it's your job to find these things out, not just walk in and hope! You got a fine for being somewhere you shouldn't be, not because the guy started shooting at you.

They open fire for many other reasons too
  • Materials relevant to missions such as sabotage items
  • energy cells/ medkis picked up from the base
  • cloned credentials
  • having a weapon drawn (i find holstering it doesnt stop a hostile reaction)
  • having a tool drawn in an illegal mode
  • probably other things i haven't checked.

So, i had my energy exchange in overload mode once by accident... took it out of that mode but got fined for reckless endangerment or somesuch, and a guard attacked even though i didn't discharge it.

Basically, just be ultra aware of what you're dying and treat everyone as hostile.

I got fined for using my ships scanner on a plant while in the no fire zone, that stung!

ah no. I know that. I walk through that area before without a fine. That was later. Not a restricted area. The fine came after he shot at me. Like I said already, I walked past him, I think he said Commander, I did not realize it but when I kept walking he started shooting then I got the fine ... and the rest happened after that. The same type of base and situation. I had no prior bounties etc on me beforehand.

I tell you what - why don't you make sure your are clean and casually walk past a scout or other guard and if he or she says stop don't. Just keep on walking and see what happens. I'm out - bye

Yup. Failure to stop for a scan results in a fine and hostility.
