Bounty Hunter Blues

Modules seem to have a 100% resale value, unlike ships where the price drops as soon as you drive it off the showroom floor. So it's worth experimenting.

I'm amazed that everytime I play a session of Elite and come back to this thread I have at least 6 amazingly helpful replies to read!

Ok, so the general consensus seems to be to turn report crimes against me off...I assume this is an option in the menu? However, I play Open Play and not Solo, does this change anything? I was only on Solo mode for about a day until I felt confident enough to take on Open Play.

Everyone says ditch the cargo bay, which I think sounds quite promising as I could definitely use the jump distance, but I'm the type who's not above taking stolen cargo and offloading it as a bit of an extra. Oh, I also have two last questions. I did infact purchase a Kill Warrant Scanner, and have made some great use of it, actually finding a person wanted in Alliance Space for about 1k and in Federation for about 4k. Thankfully I was in Fed space when I popped the criminal, and so I claimed a better paycheck. I won't be able to ever reach an alliance system, I think, but if I do, can I also claim the voucher there? And, if I have claimed vouchers, but I'm killed before I can land on a station to redeem them, do I lose them? Basically are vouchers like cargo?

And just a funny end note, I ran into a player controlled Eagle. My normal scanners saw he was wanted, and since I was in very secure Federation space, I glanced at the information expecting it to be a measly 200cr "Oops". No, this guy had 11k on his head, the most I've seen on a player before! I casually followed him as he left the no fire zone of the station, but he knew I scanned him, so he slammed on the brakes, and I over shot him. Now I have an Eagle on my six, and I was thinking, well at least I tried, when he then shoots past me trying to jump. I target his FSD and start to unload into it. He must've cancelled the jump (I seriously doubt my 2 pulse beams stopped his jump) because then he turns to joust with me. I up my shields, but I outturn him and he never fires a shot at me, despite the opening he had! So I continue to fire as much as I can and take down his shields, but he afterburners again, and finally makes it to jumpspace.

I was shocked though, as an Eagle actually ran from me in a Sidewinder...It doesn't make sense!

Hi Lee

As others may have mentioned ships turn red even without target/scan - if they are of the same faction of a "wanted" ship you go after - that instance could cause them to go red, also if a security ship is near by they report that you are involved in a incident - they may not attack - but scan everything before firing.

The best option is to remember where a remote outpost is - it will not have scanners/guns on it - and providing there are no security patrols around - you can land and pay off the fine/bounty/wanted fee. You lose rep, but clear the slate and can try again.

I always escape if I start seeing in the comms window - red text - "starting run" - I obviously stirred things too much.

Edit: I hated the Eagle, I got on a lot better with the sidey - but having a great time in the Cobra - i presume I should go for more creds to upgrade to a python.

Eagles are very manoeuvrable but with no shields they are thin as paper.
Just keep on your upgraded SW then when you have enough cash go for a viper or cobra. I have the viper and love it.

Good idea about the completely neutral station. I have an idea for one, but I'm relatively unsure, and will probably have to browse the Nav Map some more. Thanks for the advice and info!

I dunno if I'm going mad or just stupid, but I'm really starting to like that square shaped UFO wanna-be Sidewinder. But, I do have to admit I really like the look of the Viper and have been over zealously hunting those of 100k+ bounties in hopes of getting rich quick to spend it on a nice Viper.

About the Eagle's durability, that probably explains why he ran. He brought all his guns to bear straight at my 12 o'clock, but I did some flight assist off+strafing that saved me by pure luck, and he missed his opportunity to keep turning, but I was surprised at how fast he swiveled about to line up his sights. I was surprised at how fast his shields dropped, but perhaps I shouldn't let it get to my head, as I'm still only fielding the default pulse beams the SW comes with. Definitely next on my upgrade list.

hey man, not sure if someone mentioned it, but best place to start and to do bounty hunt in general is an anarchy system's nav beacon. no security there!
get a warrant scanner, scan away, check in contacts menu to see if he's got any bounty and shoot away, only minus is that you'll have to fly to a faction system afterwards to cash in. but it's much better when there are no security vessels!

Also if it gets tooo hot, you fsd out and then back in.

Honestly I advise againts anarchy systems. It can be dangerous with other players around that can destroy you out of a whim with better ships. While its not common, I was interdicted on my eagle and the guy had a asp and on one run blew my shields and 40% of my hull. Lucky me i had no cargo and typed that really fast on the chat. He was a cool guy enough to let me go. Now Im hunting in erevar, independent sistem and made quite a good amount of cash. Im moving to a fed planet now to gain some rep and buy better parts for my viper.

Yes I've had a couple people steal my hard work right from me (including a anaconda). Its really frustrating. I think it will just be a part of bounty hunting that we just have to live with. I've come to accept it, and have just worked up a strategy to reliably getting last hits. I run two gimballed pulse lasers, and a gimballed minigun. At 10% hull I open up with everything I got (making sure to let the lasers charge before) and the rate of fire usually gets me the last hit.

Smart idea, for sure, Bahrbarian.

Anyways, I guess if you do die, you lose your vouchers. I didn't find this out the hard way, thankfully, but someone mentioned it in another thread. That's really scary to think you could hit the bigtime 100K bounty and get killed in a dumb manner and lose it all. I'd put my fist through the wall.

Great thread.
Not sure if it's been mentioned but you can see your current insurance costs on the right hand computer, second tab I think?

Mines currently around 3.5k with grade b & c gear on a Sidewinder
