Bounty hunting, faction rep and security vessels - having issues

Hello!

I have been running into some issues while bounty hunting at Nav points and extraction zones.

I have learnt that killing a wanted person causes you to loose rep with the faction they are part of. Sometimes. Other times it doesn't.

I have also found that security vessels sometimes shoot at you if you shoot at someone who is part of the faction who "owns" the system. Regardless of whether they have a bounty on them. Other times they don't.

I have also found that doing the above doesn't give me a bounty... Most of the time. and that warping out and warping back in resets the security forces aggression without penalty. Sometimes I get a bounty.

I am currently friendly with the Empire, which is great as now any pilot aligned with the Empire automatically shows up as green. My only problem is that normally I'm surrounded by a sea of friendly green ships which I don't want to shoot because it's taken me ages to gain friendly rep and don't want to risk losing it.

After searching and searching and finding no definitive answer, I ask you: what the hell is going on?

And now ships are turning up either red (meaning I can shoot them regardless of bounty) and sometimes aggressive.

Can't anyone share a similar experience or at least offer an explanation?

I'm hoping that the aggressive Security Vessels is a bug, but I don't think it is. What's worse is that you aren't allowed to defend yourself against their attacks, or you will get a bounty! Whereas they do not get a bounty for attacking an non-wanted target (you)!
You are attacking their 'Friendlies' though, so you will cause aggro but then again, you are attacking a known and Wanted criminal, on the run. I could understand it if it was a Pirate/Bounty Hunter with this kind of behaviour, but currently it's just police brutality.. And I don't think it's quite right that police/security can't act with impunity.

I tend to find that BH'ing in SC I'd generally the easiest way to go around it, and I find a lot more lucrative bounties out in hyperspace :)

Either way - I'm not going to stop bounty hunting! :)

There are lots of other threads pertaining to this exact same issue.

I'm assuming due to the number of threads on the issue there are no concrete rules on this. This is what I am doing:

If they are green I don't shoot full stop.
Yellow and bounty - check faction allegiance before shooting
Red and bounty - check faction allegiance before shooting.

However every time I check, the yellow and bounty targets they are always part of the opposing faction. So it's safe to say I could shoot at will but I'm paranoid.

I have no idea why clean lakon type 9's are showing up as red. Hence I always check. I suspect a bug.

Firstly... RED and GREEN ships on your scanner have NOTHING to do with legal status.

Red Denotes a ship that is hostile to you for some reason
Green donates a ship that is friendly to you for some reason.

Firing on ships will often result in otehr ships allied to there faction turning hostile.

Do NOT confuse this with the legal status of ships. If you fire on a RED ship that is "Clean" you are commiting a crime and will become wanted. (Just because he doesnt like you, does not give you any right to shoot.)

The only ships you are legaly allowed to fire upon are "wanted" ships in the local area. You can tell if a ship is wanted by targeting it, and waiting for a basic scan to finish.

Finally... yes..there is a bug where authority ships sometimes turn on a clean commander for destroying criminals.. please ticket it if it happens to you.

I understand all that, but I'm assuming that some ships are red because I only shoot none -empire associated pirates to avoid rep loss.

Consequently this results in a rep loss with the other local factions? Does that sound right? So while they dislike me it doesn't give me the right to shoot them unless wanted?

So it's safe to say that clean targets - don't shoot. Green wanted targets - don't shoot. Everything else - shoot?

Pretty much, yes.

Bounty hunting is as much about managing your reputation as it is about collecting bounties.

There is an additional bug, whereby destroying WANTED ships belonging to the controling system faction results in nagative rep. this has been reported numerous times.

For now... untill it's fixed... dont destroy wanted ships belonging to a faction you want to impress.

I don't know if this is relevant, but I do my bounty hunting only in anarchy systems.
Never had any negative effects on my rep, at least none that I'm aware of and I try to keep an eye on this stuff.
Plus no bounty for shooting incidents with clean ships.

Ok I think I have some rough rules in place.

It was the sometimes getting faction loss for shooting empire associated pirates that threw me.

However there have been some reports on the forums that after submitting a ticket about it, the response was "working as intended". So I dunno!

Do you not get more local faction rep if you do it in controlled space?

the rep comes when you hand in the bounty vouchers as far as i can see...

Tbh, I don't know. But I worked hard for my friends and allies through trading and since the workings of the rep system are still a bit esoteric, I'd like to reduce the risk of negative rep.

Exactly that. I have worked hard to increase two local faction reps back up from neutral as a consequence of stupid mistakes.
